Is a Tank or Tankless Water Heater Better For Your Home?

When it comes to installing a new water heater, making the decision between a tank and a tankless system really depends on your home’s needs. From the kitchen all the way to the bathroom, hot water is a critical factor in your home’s comfort, so it’s very important to install the one that’s right for you and your home. To help with the decision making process, we’ve laid out some important differences between tank and tankless water heaters.
Space

If you are tight on space, installing a tankless water heater may be the way to go! These small systems are conveniently placed on the wall and have flexibility as to their positioning. Comparatively, tank water heaters are very large. These systems can be wide, often taking up the entire floor-to-ceiling space.
Hot Water

Tank water heaters keep a set amount of water constantly hot and ready to be used. Typically, around 30-50 gallons of water are stored and heated to one temperature. On the other hand, tankless water heaters do not store hot water. Instead, the water is heated as you need it. If your home doesn’t use much water, the tank water heater may be a good option for you. However, if you have high water usage and a large family, once you use up the allotted hot water, you’ll have to wait for the tank to completely refill and reheat before you have hot water again.
Energy

Tank water heaters are constantly maintaining hot water, which means energy is wasted. Tankless water heaters are much more energy efficient because they only use the energy to heat the exact amount of water that you need. This added efficient energy can save you money on your monthly bills in the long run!
Value

Tankless water heaters generally cost more to install than tank water heaters. With this being said, tankless water heaters have a longer lifespan. They last up to 20 years, whereas tank water heaters last around 10-15 years with proper maintenance. Going with a tankless water heater will cost you more upfront but it will last longer and you’ll spend less on energy every month.
