Part of the ethos behind Betti’s Buddies Garden Design and Installation, is community.

When I’m not creating gardens, I am trying my best to be part of my community and instill the same in my kids. Recently, one of the ways we’ve been learning about community is by visiting local farm stands.

Today we visited in Thompson Station. It was such a worthwhile stop! They had so many goodies: cookies, breads, sourdough pizza, honey, dot cakes, freeze dried candies and fruits, and pudding cups- just to name a few!

This client had a more traditional vision for their front landscape and already had a few specific plants they loved. Instead of completely redirecting the design, I focused on refining the space- simplifying some of the existing shrub placement, improving the flow of the beds, and incorporating pollinator friendly plants and softer seasonal color where it made sense.

The bed beneath the left window previously felt a bit heavy and awkward, so we removed several mismatched shrubs and replaced them with flowering shrubs that will bring more structure, seasonal interest, and a softer transition into the entrance of the home. We also added native Moonbeam coreopsis and Sombrero Sangrita Echinacea for longer seasonal color and additional pollinator value, while still keeping the overall look clean and approachable for the client’s style.

Not every project is a full native garden makeover, and that’s okay!

A big part of thoughtful landscape design is flexibility. My goal isn’t to create the exact same garden for every client, but to thoughtfully merge their vision with the things I value most: intentional plant choices, ecological awareness, and spaces that feel more welcoming and connected to nature ✨

Native planting doesn’t have to mean overgrown or messy. It can be refined, intentional, and designed to fit the home it belongs to.

For this front yard transformation, the goal was to create a polished landscape that matched the character of the house while still bringing in pollinator friendly plants and ecological function. Thoughtful structure, layered planting, seasonal interest, and plants that support the surrounding ecosystem can absolutely live in a more tailored space.

This design includes a strong foundation of native plants, paired with select non-native species that add value to the space, are non-invasive (of course), and still have ecological value. A resilient, beautiful landscape doesn’t have to follow one rigid formula.

We also built a natural stone border and carefully selected stone that complemented the style of the home, while still feeling organic rather than overly formal or cookie cutter.

You don’t have to choose between beauty and biodiversity. You can have both! 🦋

This mailbox bed wasn’t part of the original focus of the project. But on install day, with the plants there and the space in front of me, it was clear this space called for something more.

We had extra sun loving plants that needed the right conditions, and this patch of ground had the light to support them. So instead of forcing everything into the first plan, we adjusted and let the site help guide the final design.

This little pollinator patch was planted with multiple varieties of coreopsis and echinacea, chosen for long bloom time, bright color, and the pollinators they’ll support through the season.

That’s a big part of how I like to work. I always begin with a clear plan, but I also leave room to respond to what the landscape is saying in real time, where the sun falls, how the eye moves, what feels inviting, what the client has mentioned about their life or daily routine.

What started as a bare patch by the mailbox became one of the sweetest parts of the project- proof that some of the best decisions happen on site, when you stay open to what the space could be and work with the land instead of against it. ✨🦋

Sometimes the smallest jobs make the biggest impact. This project was just one flower bed, but refreshing this space completely changed the look of the front of the house.

A big part of the transformation was the Japanese maple. Instead of using electric trimmers and forcing it into a stiff shape, we hand-pruned it selectively to keep its natural form, movement, and character. Thoughtful pruning makes all the difference.

We also repurposed the existing boxwoods by moving them farther back to anchor the bed alongside the Japanese maple and evergreen, then opened the front for fresh color and pollinator friendly blooms.

Coreopsis ‘Jethro Tull’ and Echinacea ‘Sweet Sandia’ will bring long lasting color while supporting bees and butterflies. 🌼🦋

During every project I try to find a special space, whether it’s a specific garden bed, a little nook, a path. A little place to make extra special. For this project, that special space was a little herb garden.

A previously bare patch of grass is now a little enchanted corner. The Japanese Maple no longer looks out of place. I designed around it and now it anchors the space. We added oregano, sage, chives, parsley, and rosemary. I also added an Annabelle Hydrangea and a corner of Creeping Phlox. Can’t wait to see what this looks like in a few months ☺️✨

I was delighted to come back to a garden I worked on last summer and fall to see all kinds of stunning growth among this client’s plants.

When we started this project last year, this garden was packed full of invasives. It was a labor of love removing all of the invasives and replacing them with lovely natives. This client inherited his late mom’s garden, so I was very intentional about planting around some of the things that she had added over the years.

We got in there, removed the invasives and replaced them with creeping phlox, woodland phlox, red columbine, Huechera, rudbeckia maxima, different varieties of echinacea and many more.

You can always count on to provide healthy, happy plants 🌼

Every plant I choose is intentional. I spend a lot of time thinking about what will thrive in your space, what will support pollinators, and what will actually make your yard feel alive and peaceful. not just “filled in.”

I also care deeply about where plants come from. I prioritize sourcing from local nurseries whenever possible, because it supports our local economy and ensures plants are better suited for our environment.

And something that really matters to me, behind the scenes, is fairness.

I want my clients to feel like they’re getting something truly worth their investment… but I also want to make sure the people helping bring these gardens to life are paid fairly and treated well.

Because this work isn’t just about plants, it’s about people, too.

I intentionally leave my sunflowers standing through winter, and this morning I got a chance to observe just why it’s so beneficial. Those “messy” seed heads are an important food source for birds when everything else is scarce.

Dried blooms & seed heads =
- winter meals for birds
- shelter from wind and cold
- fewer pests in spring (birds stick around!)

Then in early spring, once birds have had their fill and things start waking up, that’s when we clean it all up and prep for new growth 🌱

Nature gets what it needs first- then we tidy.
