Freedom isn’t free.
Today, we remember the heroes who gave everything in service to this country. Their sacrifice built the foundation for the freedoms we live every day — and that deserves more than just a long weekend. 🇺🇸

In observance of Memorial Day, Building Envelope Technologies will be closed Monday, May 25.

We honor those who served — and especially those who never made it home.

At BET, some of the most challenging work isn’t always visible — it’s hidden behind walls, above ceilings, and inside the details that make buildings perform. For David Horton , that’s exactly where the work gets interesting.

David is a Principal at BET and a registered Professional Engineer, with nearly 14 years at the firm. His work focuses on existing buildings — from restoration and repair to some of the most complex forensic investigations we take on.

One challenge he particularly enjoys? Tracking down the leaks no one else has been able to solve.

“I enjoy the challenge of trying to help a building owner solve a problematic leak… sometimes it takes hours, sometimes it happens in seconds — but when you find it, it’s incredibly rewarding.”

That persistence carries through many of his projects, including one of his favorites — 7 Water Street in downtown Boston. Over the years, David has worked on everything from façade inspections and roof replacements to waterproofing and historic repairs, navigating tight constraints while preserving the integrity of a building with decades of history.

He’s also drawn to projects that offer a behind-the-scenes perspective — like work at the Museum of Fine Arts and Peabody Essex Museum, where problem-solving often happens in spaces the public never sees.

When it comes to BET’s culture, David points to a few core ideas: quality, efficiency, and staying on the leading edge of the industry — all grounded in a down-to-earth, no-frills approach.

His advice to those entering the field is simple:

“Always be learning. Spend time in the field, ask questions, and work alongside people with more experience — that’s how you figure out what you’re good at.”

What motivates him most is the outcome — seeing something broken work again, and knowing the impact that has for a client.

Outside of work, David spends time with his wife and four children — and is an avid Star Wars collector, a hobby that brings its own community and connections. If he weren’t in this field, you might find him working with animals — or leading a safari tour somewhere far from a job site.

Spring has arrived. 🌱

As temperatures rise and the seasons shift, buildings begin to face a new set of environmental conditions — from increased moisture and temperature swings to the demands placed on roofing, facade, and waterproofing systems.

Thoughtful building enclosure design, testing, and consulting help ensure structures perform as intended through every season.

Wishing everyone a great start to spring from the team at Building Envelope Technologies, Inc.

At BET, project coordination plays a critical role in moving ideas from early planning through construction. For Yasmin, that process is exactly what makes the work rewarding.

Yasmin joined BET a little over a year ago and serves as a Project Manager. She enjoys guiding projects from their earliest stages through construction while helping keep the many moving pieces aligned.

“Coordination in general is something I’m very passionate about,” she says. “Starting a project from the beginning, taking the lead, and following the entire path through construction — that’s the most fun part for me.”

One project that stands out to her is a residence hall project in Connecticut during the pandemic. The circumstances pushed her outside her comfort zone and into new responsibilities.

"It really put me on the spot,” Yasmin explains. “I had to take on more than I expected, but it pushed me into positions I hadn’t experienced before.”

When asked to describe BET’s team culture, Yasmin points to the supportive environment.

“I’d say supportive and collaborative,” she says. “Once you get to know everyone, it really feels like a family.”

Her favorite projects tend to be in the academic sector.
“The academic projects are very fun,” she says. “Talking with students and the people involved in the project creates a really great environment.”

For those just entering the industry, Yasmin encourages confidence and curiosity.
“Don’t be shy. Speak up, ask questions, advocate for yourself, and never stop trying to improve.”

Outside of work, Yasmin enjoys spending time with her children, swimming, dancing, cooking, traveling, and being outdoors. Her kids, she says, are also her biggest motivation.

If she hadn’t chosen this profession, Yasmin says she might have pursued a career in healthcare — at different points considering becoming a dentist, pediatrician, or even a neurosurgeon.
