It started out as "let's strip the old front entry door". Original to the 1800's home we uncovered patches, filler and broken parts. So we stopped and went to a plan B. The foyer needed more light, but the door was oversized in width and height. Back to the shop. After building the new door to allow for glass installation rather than solid panels we waited. The owner worked with a local glass artist to create beautiful hand cut leaded glass panels that are protected on both sides by safety glass. Well worth the wait. Hinges were sand blasted and refinished, new lockset and a new look was created for the home.

After nearly a year of delays, bureaucratic nonsense and blunders, we had to wish the old barn a farewell. Hopefully someone will pick up the process at a future date and finish the transformation.
On to new adventures.

Another neglected building needing help. Kind of an interesting structure. Pretty basic, 2 floors of open floor plan. The catch....it's been a hoarders haven for decades and the first floor level has a rotted center girder causing the middle of the first floor to sag about 2' in the center. Second floor looks like they closed the door and that was it. Pretty good shape. So, once more of the weight is removed, we'll go in and push the first floor back into shape, install a new girder and call this one saved. Won't be a full restoration at this point but rather another stabilization project. Meanwhile the windows will be restored to keep the weather out, make the building presentable and we'll get back over to the barn project.

Well, phase one designs are being finished up. Taking the tired old dairy barn and converting it to a guest house. Now we hope for tolerable weather and look forward to breaking ground on phase 2 and three next year.

Finished the week out moving a door opening in the front of the barn. Owner asked us if we could just "slide it". Sure!! Well, at least we got the old undersized timber out and rebuilt well.

Weathered in this week. Even got the high gable ends trimmed out.

How this project started. We were called in to save the existing barn and restore the existing home. The home is from 1723 in really bad shape. After doing a complete set of 3D scans on both buildings and working on design concepts, it was determined the house isn't worth the effort. So it's scheduled to be dismantled, salvage the timbers that can be saved and repurposed in the new home to be built next year.
Only the second building in more than 30 years we couldn't save. Everything has a life expectancy.

This phase of the project is about saving the structure. Until the architects finish the design work, the endwalls will be closed in and we'll cut the windows and doors in upon the completed design.
