This filter cracked in a customer's basement. We installed it about 3 1/2 years ago. So who should pay: the manufacturer, the homeowner, or the installer?

Here's what we did: we gave the customer two options, both at no charge. Replace the filter, or remove it and straight-pipe it. They chose the straight pipe.

It's that time of year. Here's how to winterize your outdoor faucets in 5 steps:

1. Shut off the inside valve
2. Open the outside faucet
3. Open the drain cap on the inside valve (have a bucket ready)
4. Leave the outside faucet open all winter
5. Put the cap back on, loose

Why leave it open? If that inside valve ever leaks, you'll see water outside instead of finding a frozen, burst pipe inside your wall.
