The chilly nights & early mornings the past several days definitely reminded us that Fall (Autumn) was just around the bend, & as of last night, it has officially arrived. A lot of us tend to be defiant when it comes to turning our heat on before a certain time (us too), but we'd like to let you know that now is a good time to do a test run on your system to make sure it fires up fine & there are no concerns before the real cold temps hit. Earlier in the morning or later in the day when the temperature drops again, turn your system on, turn the thermostat up, & make sure everything is cycling & your baseboard, panels, radiant, etc. are getting warm. Your baseboard & piping may be cold so some creaking or "snapping" heard will usually be normal, but should subside once the system fully cycles through & everything gets warm. If something seems off, it doesn't hurt to reach out. Our most common "no heat" calls tend to be: dead thermostat batteries, or out of fuel. We recommend checking &/or replacing your thermostat batteries at the start of every season, & check your oil/LP tanks regularly. In Addition, we are a small business that primarily focuses on repair & maintenance, & no heats during the heating season always take priority. At this time, we are not taking new estimate appointments for full system replacements or larger jobs until this heating season is over, unless it is an emergency. We will start taking new estimates for larger jobs again beginning April 1, 2027.

We hope everyone has had a fantastic Summer so far. While many of us hate to hear it, the season is coming to an end sooner than later. We wanted to remind everyone that, starting September 1, 2026, our boiler & furnace cleaning pricing is increasing (as previously stated in our July post). We will never like having to increase prices, but unfortunately need to due to increased cost of doing business, particularly when it comes to material & fuel costs. Beginning September 1st, our standard boiler & furnace cleaning rate will increase from $200 to $225 ($250 for mobile homes, up from $225). However, we will honor our current price for anyone who schedules now (& those already scheduled) even if the cleaning is booked into September. That means you have until August 31st to set up a cleaning on your system under our current price (Cannot be booked past September 30th). Any calls, emails, etc. received on & after September 1st will fall under the updated pricing. If you have friends & family who are in need of a cleaning on their heating system & live in our operating area - Ellsworth, Bar Harbor, Bucksport, Orland, Holden, Dedham, Brewer, Bangor (all 04401 zips), Hampden, Orrington, Eddington, Clifton - Now is the time to have them reach out. At this time, our standard labor rate of $100/hr. ($150/hr. with a helper) for all other heating & gas services will remain the same.

We hope everyone had a fantastic & safe July 4th! We wanted to take this time to remind everyone that if you need your boiler or furnace cleaned / serviced, between Ellsworth to Bangor (All 04401 Zips & Bar Harbor Area), now is the time to get them scheduled, oil systems especially due to the soot that collects during the heating season & settles in the chamber & smoke pipe that can damage your system due to the corrosive nature & moisture retention. Soot buildup can decrease your heat transfer efficiency resulting in higher fuel bills. While gas (LP & Natural) systems can sometimes go a year or two between cleanings, we also always recommend having your gas system checked out, cleaned / serviced on a regular yearly basis to identify any potential issues before the next heating season. Emergency calls are expensive, & parts & materials may not always be available same day. Don't wait until it is an emergency. Additionally, Pricing for standard cleanings, due to increasing material costs, is going up this Fall, starting September 1st.

Here is a quick reminder for everyone! The temperatures are going to drop quick tomorrow afternoon & will stay brutally cold through the weekend with wind chills making it feel even colder. The temperature in your house will likely not reach or maintain the temperature set on your thermostat, but that does not mean your heating system or thermostat has an issue. Most standard systems are designed around a 0°F outdoor temperature & each degree below that has a negative effect. To minimize that effect, please make sure your baseboards & / or vents are cleaned (dust, pet hair, etc.), & clear any blockages such as furniture. Also, PLEASE remember to leave your heat turned up, especially over night or when you leave the house & to close / insulate any gaps that may allow air to flow through. Leave doors open to rooms where there is no heat source, open cabinet doors that contain water pipes, check your thermostat batteries, & make sure your fuel tank(s) have fuel. DO NOT turn your thermostats down before bed or before leaving the house thinking it will save you money or make you more comfortable sleeping. It does not take long for a bend in a water pipe to freeze just enough to stop flow. Emergency no heat calls are expensive & can sometimes be avoided by following these simple tips. Please be sure to let your neighbors know & check on those most vulnerable when the temperatures are at the worst.

Quick update! Sloan's Heating now has an office assistant, Joe, who will be answering the primary phone, as well as assisting with emails, scheduling, bookkeeping, etc. going forward. We have also added a new number for emergency calls & have ordered new business cards that will include this new emergency number.
