Nevada Water Heater Requirements
• Seismic Bracing: Two straps are required to anchor the heater, located in the upper and lower one-third of the unit’s vertical dimension.
• Drain Pans: Required for all tank-type heaters in areas where leaks cause damage. Pans must be galvanized steel, aluminum, or approved materials and drained to the exterior for 2nd-level installations.
• Elevation in Garages: Gas water heaters must be installed so their ignition source is at least 18 inches above the garage floor.
• Temperature & Pressure (T&P) Relief: Must be installed and piped to a safe, visible location, typically terminating 6 to 24 inches above the ground.
• Shutoff Valves: Accessible, dedicated water shutoff valves and, for gas units, gas shutoff valves (within 6 feet) must be installed.
• Sediment Traps: Required on gas lines for new or replaced water heaters.
• Expansion Tanks: Often required, particularly in closed-loop systems, to manage pressure.
