PEST-PROOF FRIDAY 🪳🏡
Large outdoor cockroaches usually start outside, so one of the best ways to reduce the chances of them wandering indoors is to make the area around your home less inviting.
A few practical steps can help:
✅ Pull mulch and leaf litter back from the foundation
✅ Remove leaves, wood, and other organic debris that creates hiding places
✅ Reduce moisture around the home and direct water away from the foundation
✅ Install or replace worn door sweeps
✅ Seal gaps around doors, windows, plumbing, electrical penetrations, and other exterior openings
The goal is simple: reduce harborage outside and close off the pathways that let pests move inside.
Small exterior maintenance steps can make a noticeable difference over time.

TEST YOUR PEST IQ! 🪳
Can you tell the difference between an indoor cockroach infestation and an outdoor invader?
Look at each of the four situations in the graphic and decide whether it is more likely:
A. Indoor Infestation
or
B. Outdoor Invader
Post your answers in the comments like this:
1-B, 2-B, 3-B, 4-A
Large outdoor cockroaches can occasionally wander inside, especially after heavy rain, heat, or changes in outdoor conditions. But repeated activity in kitchens, cabinets, or other indoor areas can point to a very different situation.
We’ll post the answers and explain the reasoning behind each one later.

ANSWER REVEAL! 🪳
How did you do on this week’s Test Your Pest IQ?
The key is understanding the difference between an outdoor cockroach that wandered inside and signs of a true indoor infestation.
1. Outdoor invader
A single large cockroach indoors after rain or changing weather can simply be an outdoor pest that found its way inside.
2. Outdoor invader
Large cockroaches found under mulch or leaf litter are usually right where they prefer to live — outdoors.
3. Outdoor invader
A large cockroach near a garage door is often using that area as an entry point from outside.
4. Indoor infestation
Repeated cockroach activity in kitchen cabinets, especially around food and dishes, is a much stronger sign that the problem may be established indoors.
The takeaway: one large roach indoors does not always mean you have an infestation — but repeated indoor activity deserves closer attention.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW: OUTDOOR COCKROACHES / “PALMETTO BUGS” 🪳
Not every large cockroach you see inside your home started there.
In Florida, many of the larger cockroaches people commonly call “palmetto bugs” spend much of their time outdoors around:
✅ Mulch and leaf litter
✅ Damp landscaping
✅ Wood piles and debris
✅ Shaded, protected areas
✅ Other places that hold moisture
So why do they end up inside?
Changes in weather, heavy rain, heat, moisture, and easy access points around the home can all push or allow outdoor cockroaches indoors. They may enter through gaps around doors, windows, garages, plumbing penetrations, and other small openings.
One important distinction: seeing one large outdoor cockroach inside does not always mean you have an indoor infestation. Sometimes it is simply an outdoor pest that found its way in.
A few good prevention steps include keeping mulch and leaf litter from building up against the home, reducing excess moisture, checking door sweeps, and sealing obvious exterior gaps.
The more you understand where these pests normally live, the easier it is to understand why they are showing up inside.

PEST-PROOF FRIDAY 🪳
German cockroaches may be small, but once they get established, they can become a big problem fast.
The good news? A few simple steps can make your home much less inviting:
✅ Eliminate food sources
✅ Reduce moisture
✅ Keep it clean
✅ Manage trash properly
✅ Check hidden areas like under sinks, behind appliances, and inside cabinets
German cockroaches are drawn to food, water, warmth, and shelter, so prevention starts by cutting off what they need to survive.
If you’re seeing signs of roaches, don’t wait. Early action can make all the difference.

The correct answer is A — the kitchen.
German cockroaches are most often noticed first in areas where they can find food, moisture, warmth, and tight hiding spaces. That makes kitchens especially attractive, particularly around:
✅ Sinks and plumbing areas
✅ Refrigerators and other appliances
✅ Cabinets and drawers
✅ Food storage and preparation areas
✅ Small cracks and hidden spaces
One important thing to remember: seeing one German cockroach can sometimes mean there are more hiding nearby.
Early detection matters. The sooner you identify where they’re active and what conditions are supporting them, the easier it is to keep the problem from growing.
If you continue seeing signs of cockroaches, a professional inspection can help identify the source and determine the best treatment plan.

German cockroaches are especially good at finding small spaces around kitchens and bathrooms where moisture and food are easy to reach. A slow leak under the sink, crumbs behind an appliance, or cardboard stored in a cabinet can give them exactly what they need to stay.

A few simple changes can make a big difference:

Repair dripping faucets and hidden leaks
Clean under and behind appliances
Keep food and pet food sealed
Reduce cardboard and clutter
Watch warm areas around motors and electronics

Seeing one cockroach can sometimes mean there are more hiding nearby, so early inspection matters.
