Glass Dome Installation with earthen floor

One of the most unique projects we've worked on. The earthen floor uses soil from the location to create a natural, breathable material with great thermal mass, helping regulate temperature inside the dome throughout the day. It also brings a warm, grounded feel underfoot, which suits the space's purpose as a meditation & sound bath retreat perfectly. It's the kind of specialty install that takes precision and patience, and we're proud of how it turned out. One of the things I love most about building is finding ways to create beautiful, functional homes that also care for the earth.

I built this kitchen from the ground up and installed a graywater system so water from the home could be put to better use instead of simply going to waste. It is a practical feature that helps reduce water use while supporting the surrounding landscape.

Sustainable building does not always have to mean doing something extreme. Sometimes it is about making thoughtful choices behind the walls and beneath the finishes that allow a home to work more responsibly for years to come.

I believe a well-built home should take care of the people living in it while also being mindful of the land it sits on. That is the kind of work I love doing.

Valinor was referred by Hubbell & Hubbell Architects to help restore this remarkable artist’s retreat: a home constructed from steel, concrete, and foam, then sculpted into something that blurs the line between architecture and art.

The current homeowner, fell in love with the property and envisioned bringing its original beauty back to life. And we had the pleasure of working alongside the talented artists and who added their unique touches.

This is more than a house. It is a sculpture shaped into the landscape; a home with a soul.

Our work included:

Complete interior and exterior repainting
New stained-concrete and wood flooring throughout
Full restoration and waterproofing of two rooftop decks
Replacement of the water-supply and sewer piping
Complete electrical rewiring
Full renovation of each bathroom

Images from our first straw bale build:

Straw bale walls aren't just beautiful, they're incredibly well insulated, meaning the home stays naturally cooler in summer and warmer in winter, cutting heating/cooling costs and helping the environment.

And it might sound counterintuitive, but densely-packed straw bale walls (especially plastered) actually perform better in fire testing than traditional builds.

They're also healthy. It's breathable, natural material let moisture move through the walls, which can mean healthier indoor air.

Did we mention it's sustainable? Straw is a fast-growing agricultural byproduct (often otherwise burned as waste), so building with it sequesters carbon instead of relying on carbon-intensive materials.
