This is a perfect example of how innovation needs to happen as we adapt to a changing land scape. Climate change, pest vector, and forest health issues are not going away. Germany is the cradle of modern forestry and they rely heavily on plantations in their management. The transition to more diverse systems to improve resiliency is happening across the globe. We are mindful this in our management. Remember always practice Forestry with Foresight.

Vast swathes of the country’s trees have been killed off by droughts and infestations, in a trend sweeping across Europe. A shift towards more biodiverse cultivation could offer answers

While the Holiday season is upon us, Christmas trees become a temporary feature in many of our homes. Some trees even become displays at a larger scale. We were very proud this year to aid in the donation of this Norway spruce to the South Foster Volunteer Fire Co. for their holiday display. This display can be found at the corner of US Route 6 and Mount Hygeia Road in Foster, RI. The tree was sourced from our forester Wolf Mueller's family property in Foster. His cousin won the tree in 2007 in a holiday raffle at the Captain Issacs Paine School. Over this tree’s lifetime it provided nesting habitat for migratory birds, shade, shelter on hot summer days, and landscape aesthetic value. This impressive tree unfortunately outgrew the space where it was planted, so when the call went out for yet another tree for the SFFC it was a perfect option. The Mueller's property in Foster is a member of the American Tree Farm system and they actively manage their forest for a multitude of uses under Rhode Island current use forestry program. While growing Christmas trees may not be the highest priority for the Mueller family, this is a great example of how local wood products can have long lasting impact on a community. So, as we celebrate this holiday season support your local Christmas tree farmers and pick up your own little holiday legacy. If you are a forest landowner in Rhode Island or Massachusetts and you would like to develop a plan, possibly creating your own future stories like this one, please give us a call.

From the Team at W.T. Mueller FCM, Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas!!!

Part of our approach to forest management considers creating high quality wildlife habitat for little guys like the American Woodcock. If you would like to learn more about how you can enhance your woodlot for Woodcock, and a litany of other native wildlife, reach out to a forester today!

Do you know when Woodcock chicks learn to fly? Just 2 short weeks after hatching!

Around 2 weeks they can make short flights and will be completely independent after 5 weeks. When the fall comes, they'll be ready for their first migration!

⚠️ PLEASE BE ADVISED: DEM’s Forest Fire Program plans to conduct a low-severity prescribed burn tomorrow, Tuesday, 4/23/24 weather permitting, at Nicholas Farm Management Area in Coventry. There is no need for residents to contact emergency services if they see fire in the area or smell the smoke emanating from it. DEM advises the public not to approach the area to avoid distracting the fire crews and unnecessarily occupying emergency personnel.

DEM first notified the public of the likelihood of prescribed fires on February 7, as the Forest Fire Program continues its prescribed fire season this spring for habitat restoration and to reduce the risk of unplanned, high-severity, destructive wildfires. For more information on the prescribed fire season, please visit https://dem.ri.gov/press-releases/dem-poised-resume-prescribed-burns-coming-weeks-ahead-spring-fire-season-habitat.

Did you know that nearly 50% of the weight of wood is carbon? Carbon found in wood products has been captured by trees via photosynthesis and then locked into the wood. Choosing wood products supports sustainable forestry practices and helps remove carbon from the atmosphere. Choose WOOD!

We would like to introduce the newest edition to our team. Brandy is our new company head of morale and looks forward to chasing more squirrels while out conducting field work. In her free time she enjoys napping, chasing her jolly ball, and belly rubs.

Time for a tailgate of shame: these balloons were found today by our consultants working in the field. While they maybe a fun decoration to your bridal shower, birthday party, or help to brighten a mood, they do not belong in the forest. All six of these were found in a remote interior forest and undoubtedly got there from people releasing them into the air. If you are going to purchase a balloon remember to secure it to something that will prevent it from flying away. Once done with your colorful attention grabbers, deflate and dispose of them properly. Allowing balloons to fly away is why so many are found where they are not supposed to be. They will come back to earth and will not decompose laying on the forest floor. If you release balloons you are a litter bug, and no one wants to be that! Let's keep are forest clean so we can enjoy our forest!
