🚨🔥 FIRE SAFETY FRIDAY! 🔥🚨

From the great Fire Marshal Bill: “Lemme show ya something”

Did you know that smoke detectors have an expiration date?10 YEARS! That is generally how long a smoke detector is designed to last before it needs to be replaced.

Well… apparently nobody told this one. 😂

This little guy decided to work some overtime. And by overtime, I mean he was WELL past retirement age!

Just because that little green light is still on or it beeps when you push the test button does not mean it will reliably detect smoke.

A few friendly reminders:

- Replace smoke detectors every 10 years.

- Check the manufacture date on the back of the detector, not the date you moved into the house.

- Test your smoke detectors monthly.

- Do not wait for a detector to stop working before replacing it.

Sometimes the most important handyman jobs are not the ones that make your house look better. They are the ones that help keep your family safe.

So here is your Fire Safety Friday homework. Go check the dates on your smoke detectors!

And if yours is old enough to have a driver’s license, we REALLY need to talk! 😂

This bathroom exhaust fan looked like it was going to be a simple swap. Of course it was not. I find this to be standard for Hanyman Work... seriously...

Once I pulled the old fan out, it became pretty clear that something "interesting" had happened during the original installation. The old fan had been installed in the wrong direction, and the framing had even been notched to make it work. (photo 1)

My guess?

They cut the opening before figuring out which direction the fan actually needed to sit.

That probably worked fine for the old oversized unit, but the new fan was much smaller, so reinstalling it the same way was not an option. (photo 2)

As you can see, the new one fit the opening like a glove.

So the job turned into much more than replacing a fan.

I had to patch the ceiling, tape it, mud it, sand it, match the texture, paint it, and then install the new fan properly. (photo 4)

In the end, the new unit looks like it was supposed to be there all along.That is usually the goal. Make the repair disappear.

Sometimes improving curb appeal is not about adding something.

Sometimes it is about taking something away.

The bushes in front of this house had gotten so large that they were hiding a big portion of the front of the property and making everything feel closed in.

So we cut them back and opened the whole area up. The difference is huge.

You can actually see the house again, the front steps feel more inviting, and the entire exterior looks cleaner and more open.

When you are getting a property ready to sell, first impressions matter.
A little trimming can go a long way.

First... for everyone that has been trying to get a hold of me... I've been very deep on a condo refresh. I'll get to you shortly. I promise.

Day 1 of sharing this home’s transformation, but definitely not the first thing we completed.

I wanted to start with the front door because it is one of the most important parts of the house.

It welcomes you home every day. good or bad.
It is the first thing guests see.
And when a house is getting ready to be listed, it helps set the tone for everything a buyer is about to walk into.

The owner originally thought the door needed to be replaced.
I took a look at it and thought we could bring it back without going that far.
So instead of replacing the whole door (which would have cost a lot more), we cleaned it up, repaired what needed attention, refreshed the finish, and updated the hardware.
Much better.

But here is the funny part.

The front door is usually one of the last things you want to finish.
Why? Because while the rest of the work is happening, tools, materials, ladders, paint, flooring, and everything else are constantly coming in and out of the house. The last thing you want to do is make the front door look perfect and then beat it up for the next two weeks. 😂

So after the heavy work was done, this door finally got its turn. A lot of wear, marks, and years of use were cleaned up, the finish was refreshed, and the hardware was updated.

Now it looks like the entrance this house deserves.

Over the next few days, I will be sharing the rest of the work that went into getting this home ready to hit the market by the end of the month. But I figured the best place to start the story was where every buyer will start theirs.

I’m still amazed the revelation art war was started in this state… here are some ridiculous laws in this state:

Supposedly you cannot eat more than three sandwiches at a wake.

Supposedly two men cannot carry a bathtub across the town green in Longmeadow.

And Massachusetts actually made square dancing the official folk dance of the Commonwealth.

After replacing this toilet paper holder, I would like to formally submit one more ridiculous law:

It should be illegal to install a toilet paper holder that only holds the roll on one side.

I have to admit, I have an absolutely unreasonable level of disapproval for the original holder. 100% of them will fail!

That being said…

It certainly creates business for I Have a Guy Handyman Service. 😉

So maybe I should not complain too much.

New Client! Today was one of those jobs where one little repair turned into, “Well… while I’m here.”

Started with the toilet. Replaced the flush handle bar and adjusted the flapper so everything was flushing the way it should.

Next up was the smoke/CO detector. I determined the old one was faulty… although being “accidentally ripped out of the ceiling” probably didn’t help its chances. 😂 Picked up a new one and got the house protected again.

Then came the fun one…

Found a completely DEAD GFCI outlet in the kitchen. After pulling it apart, I discovered it had been wired backwards.
There is a reason a GFCI has a LINE side and a LOAD side.

Apparently whoever installed this one about six years ago decided those were more of a suggestion. ughhh

Rewired it correctly, tested everything, and all the outlets in the kitchen now work! Bye Bye Power Strip.

Toilet flushing ✅
Smoke and CO detector working ✅
Kitchen GFI alive again ✅

Sometimes handyman work is fixing what broke.
Sometimes it is fixing what was never right in the first place.

Sometimes after a full day of handyman work, I come home pretty tired and ready to be done for the day.

But when your son asks if you can teach him how to install a new ceiling fan in his room, you take the opportunity.

So instead of just doing it for him, we did it together. Went to HD picked out the new one, removed the old one, and installed the new one.

A little electrical work, a little troubleshooting, a little patience, and hopefully a skill he will remember for a long time.

There is something pretty cool about teaching your kids how to work with their hands and figure things out for themselves.

Teach a man to fish, and he will eat for a lifetime.

Teach your son how to install a ceiling fan, and I have a memory for a lifetime.

Sometimes the best jobs are the ones you do at home.

Repeat client and a pretty satisfying upgrade on this one.

We swapped out all of the old gold colored door hardware and replaced it with black k***s and black hinges throughout the house.

It is one of those changes that seems small until you see everything together. The black hardware gives the doors a much cleaner, more updated look and really changes the feel of the space.

While I was working, I had a completely random memory from being a kid on the bus. Because you know… I was working on so many doork***s

You would yell “DOORKNOB!” and would punch your buddy as hard as you wanted in the shoulder… but I could not remember why, so naturally I asked several guys over 40.

Mystery solved.

“doorknob” was the safety word if you farted. And if your buddy didn’t say it, you could hall off on them and say “doorknob”!

So this job ended up being part hardware upgrade, part childhood research project.

Either way, the gold is gone, the black hardware looks great, and I now know way more about old school bus rules than I did when I started the job.

Another fun little upgrade! 💡🎉

This client had just finished installing new siding and patio pavers, so the goal was to add lighting without taking away from how clean everything looked.

I custom ordered the LED color changing bistro lights specifically for this space (length) and installed 48 feet of support cable to hang them properly across the patio.

And yes, they have PARTY MODE! 😂🎉

Who does not love a good party?!

For the power, I routed and secured the cord neatly along the brand new siding using 3M adhesive mounting clips so there were no loose wires hanging around and the finished look stayed clean.

Sometimes the finishing touches are what really bring a space together.

New siding. New patio. Custom lighting.

Now this backyard is ready for quiet nights, cookouts, and apparently a full blown party whenever the mood hits. 🕺😂

No job too small.

Maybe I need to add “party mode” to my quotes?
