Heating season is here. Two Years, One Payment gives you a heating visit and a cooling visit every year, with a filter at each one, for 2 years and 1 payment.

It's our fall offer on the Energy Savings Agreement: pay for one year of maintenance, and the second year is on us. $170 per unit in Fresno County. It's for new ESA members and former members whose last agreement ended at least 24 months ago. Current members keep their current benefits.

It clicked on. It never lit.

That was the call on an attic furnace in Madera last heating season. The thermostat called for heat, the furnace clicked, and no flame followed.

Our tech opened the cabinet and found what you see in these photos: heavy rust and scale on the gas inlet pipe and the fittings below the gas valve. Attic furnaces sit out of sight, and nobody sees buildup like this until someone opens the cabinet.

Our tech worked the problem through, and the furnace was heating again when the job was done.

Repair the furnace or replace it? Homeowners ask us that every fall, and here's how we work through it.

1. How old is the furnace? Age matters, and it's one piece of the picture.
2. What exactly is wrong, and what will the repair fix? A repair that solves the problem is a good repair.
3. What else is wearing? If the next repair is lined up right behind this one, we'll tell you.

An example: a cracked heat exchanger on an older furnace is a safety problem and a major repair, so we'd lay out both options side by side and let you choose. A worn igniter on the same furnace is a small fix, and we'd say so.

Either way, you get a straight answer and no pressure. Larry Metheny started Nalk in 1986, and that's still how we work.

Your furnace has been sitting idle since spring. The first cold Valley morning is when it tells you whether that was a good rest or a bad one.

You don't have to switch over to heat yet. The afternoons are still warm, so this is the easy window to get ready before that first 40-degree morning catches you off guard. Here's the same checklist we'd hand a neighbor over the fence:

Change the filter first. It's been pulling dust all summer, and a clean one helps your system breathe whether it's cooling or heating.

Walk the house and clear your vents and returns. A summer's worth of furniture, rugs, and boxes drift in front of registers without anyone noticing. Give each one some open space.

Clear leaves, weeds, and anything stacked too close to the outdoor unit and around the furnace.

Get a pre-season maintenance look on the calendar. One of our techs can check the heating side now, so a worn part turns up on a Tuesday instead of on the coldest morning of the year.

The first time you run the heat, a little dust burning off is normal and fades fast. A sharp smell, or one that smells electrical or like gas, is your cue to shut it down and call a professional.
