Do you have any junctions like these in your house? By NEC codes, any wire junctions like this should be in an UL-listed box or enclosure and with the cover fastened. Enclosures are there to keep any potential fires inside for a certain amount of time, buying time for anyone deal with it, call for help, or escape.
