Mosquito tests positive for West Nile Virus in Georgetown County

A mosquito sample collected in Georgetown County has tested positive for West Nile Virus.
Georgetown County Mosquito Control and the S.C. Department of Public Health confirmed the positive sample during routine testing Aug. 13.
In response, the county has stepped up mosquito-control efforts in affected areas. Additional truck spraying began Thursday night and will continue through the weekend and into next week. Spraying generally takes place between midnight and dawn.
Officials say the risk to the general public remains low but are urging residents to take precautions, including using insect repellent, wearing long sleeves and pants when possible and getting rid of standing water where mosquitoes can breed.
Most people infected with West Nile Virus do not develop symptoms. In rare cases, however, the virus can cause serious neurological illness.
Residents can report excessive mosquito activity or areas of standing water by calling Georgetown County Mosquito Control at 843-545-3615.
