Working with another one of our commercial partners in Mesa, AZ this week repairing depressed paver sections and trip hazards.

Depressed or sunken pavers can occur for a variety of reasons but they all point to a failing base or subgrade. Aggregate base course (abc) is the strongest base and is recommended over excessive amounts of quarter minus or sand. ABC holds less moisture than quarter minus and holds up longer. It’s why it’s used when building roadways.

Once the ABC is installed and compacted in 1” - 3” lifts, a thin layer or quarter minus or sand is used as a bedding layer for the pavers. The bedding layer should be between a 1/2”- 1” maximum. The closer the bedding layer is to an 1” or more, the liability of depressed pavers increases. Today’s project exposed 2” - 2.5” of sand that the original contractor installed.

This is another example of why the lowest bid isn’t always the right choice. Often contractors bid too competitively and underestimate the labor or material needed to build a lasting product. Halfway through the project they realize they’re losing money and are forced to take shortcuts to offset the loss. While honest mistakes happen, paying employees a healthy wage and bidding projects with care mitigates errors and costly repairs in the future.

Goodbye muddy sod, hello low-maintenance curb appeal 🌿☀️ For this front yard in the Clemente Ranch community, we built it right from the ground up with a solid foundation of 3” of aggregate base course and a half inch of minus as a bedding layer.

Once the base was compacted, graded and ready, we installed a durable and soft, high-quality artificial turf, a fresh paver border, paver steps, and drought-tolerant yucca for a clean Arizona-friendly look.

Whether you go with us or another licensed contractor, be sure to ask about the base materials. Aggregate base course (abc) over a compacted subgrade will give the best possible foundation and prevent depressions and rutting.

Before and After at a new build in East Valley this week. We installed a new irrigation drip system, overlaid and extended the patio, imported over 30 tons of base material and then installed premium turf. We took it a step further and installed perimeter low voltage lighting and shrubs. Included in the installation was a custom window sun screen to prevent turf melt. The homeowner in the Ashton Woods “Destination at Gateway” community was very happy.

This home in Gold Canyon, Arizona had a steep slope in their backyard. The family wanted a garden area with a flexible and custom irrigation system.

Using Belgard’s “Easton” wall blocks and Marina bullnose coping, we created a tiered garden area. The bullnose coping softened the top course and created an elegant space for sitting. Adding the planters helped expand the aesthetic of the narrow space with intentionality and function.

It was a pleasure collaborating with this homeowner in the Hawes Crossing community in Mesa, AZ. Installing freshly cut sod and pavers made a world of difference.

The foundation is key. Much of what makes things strong and resilient is often below the ground and out of sight.

For this project, we imported over 15 tons of screened fill dirt and amended it with fertilizer. We also brought in 15 tons of ABC for the paver base.

Compacted and solid, this yard will stand the test of time.
