These photos show a moisture meter getting a reading on a "rammed earth wall" - but what the heck is that and what is the benefit to this technique in comparison to other building methods??

A rammed earth wall is a construction technique that involves compacting a mixture of damp earth, sand, gravel, and sometimes clay into a formwork to create solid, sturdy walls. This method has been used for centuries across various cultures and has seen a resurgence in modern sustainable building practices.

Benefits:

- Sustainability: Rammed earth uses natural and often locally available materials, reducing the carbon footprint associated with transportation.
- Thermal Mass: The thick, dense walls provide excellent thermal mass, helping to regulate indoor temperatures by absorbing heat during the day and releasing it at night.
- Aesthetics: Rammed earth walls have a natural, rustic appearance that can be very visually appealing.

"Why do firefighters poke holes in the ceiling when putting out a residential fire??" Firefighters poke holes in the ceiling during a residential fire to achieve several critical objectives:

Ventilation: Creating holes allows smoke, heat, and toxic gases to escape from the structure, improving visibility and reducing the risk of backdraft or flashover. This makes it safer for firefighters to operate and for any occupants who may still be inside.

Fire Extension Check: By poking holes, firefighters can check for the presence of fire in the attic or other concealed spaces above the ceiling. Fire can spread through these hidden areas, and identifying its location helps in targeting firefighting efforts more effectively.

Water Application: Holes provide access points for firefighters to direct water streams into areas that might be difficult to reach otherwise, helping to extinguish the fire more thoroughly.

Structural Assessment: Creating openings in the ceiling allows firefighters to assess the structural integrity of the building. If the fire has compromised the ceiling or roof, it may be unsafe for firefighters to be underneath or for continued operations within certain parts of the building.

By performing these actions, firefighters enhance their ability to control and extinguish the fire while minimizing damage and improving overall safety!
