Sea Beast Puppet Company is a Chicago-based troupe of puppeteers, actors, and designers with one simple goal: to promote and provide the best puppetry possible in the Chicagoland area. Formed in 2009 Sea Beast has performed all over Chicago, from the North Side to the South, from the suburbs to downtown, bringing their unique vision of the art of puppetry to audiences of all ages.

What’s a Puppet Slam? Find out tonight!
A puppet slam is a curated night of short-form puppetry (8 minutes or less) featuring multiple artists and a broad mix of techniques — shadow, film, object theatre, hand/rod, and more. Puppet Meltdown embraces personal autonomy and celebrates all things female, showcasing a diverse range of styles, subjects, and tones from puppetry professionals of many backgrounds. This edition includes original works from the United States, Newfoundland, and Kenya.
Funding is made possible in part by the Puppet Slam Network and Sea Beast Puppet Company. All proceeds go to support the slam and the artists who so generously contribute their work.

Artist Spotlight: Kat Pleviak — 'Last Call' (shadow puppetry)
Sensitively told and largely nonverbal, 'Last Call' explores how culture projects a singular image onto sex-positive women while each person remains specific and complex. We meet a burlesque dancer in her quiet after-show ritual — removing costume pieces and makeup — revealing not a stereotype, but someone whole.

Puppet Meltdown Artist Spotlight: Words, then worlds. Kimzyn Campbell translates a life in arts writing and editing into smart, precise puppetry that reads beautifully from the stage. Kimzyn Campbell writes for arts organizations and frequently contributes to the Chicago Reader on the performing arts. Onstage, Kim has performed at Puppet Qu**rs, Shoestring Puppets, and Nasty, Brutish & Short. They live in Chicago and are a member of the American Theatre Critics Association.

Puppet Meltdown Artist Spotlight: Cat Aceto
Shadow theatre artist Cat Aceto crafts layered, dreamlike worlds with overhead projectors, paper puppets, human silhouettes, and found objects. Her repertoire spans intimate shorts and full productions of Shakespeare — Macbeth (2022), Hamlet (2024), and 'The Tempest' (coming fall 2025). She produces two annual Shakespeare-themed puppet slams — Ciphers to this Great Accompt (Pittsburgh Shakespeare in the Parks) and Puppets Dallying (Steel City Shakespeare Center). Cat’s work — live and filmed — has appeared in slams across the U.S. and Canada.

Burlesque artist and puppeteer Pixie Danger has spent 7 years bringing their personal blend of stupid, sexy, and beautifully unsettling work to stages across the country. With training in marionette performance, shadow puppetry, classical ballet, and special-effects design, Pixie fuses high craft with audacious humor — then gleefully subverts it. The result: acts that are as technically sharp as they are disarmingly human.

Puppet Meltdown Artist Spotlight: Hebert Poll Gutiérrez (Director & Playwright)
Cuban-Canadian author, storyteller, poet, and playwright with 19 years of experience, Hebert Poll Gutiérrez champions the power of theatre to shape realities and safeguard his triple identity — artist, Cuban, and Afro-descendant. He’s published nine books (including 'Last Planet Standing' — theatre, Letra de Kmbio, France, 2023; 'Whispers from the Black Gods' — poetry, The Elite Lizzard Publishing, Canada, 2022). His writings appear in magazines and 20+ anthologies across the Americas and Europe; his scripts have been produced throughout Latin America, Europe, and Canada. He’s an active member of multiple Canadian arts organizations (SpanicArts Calgary, Playwrights Guild of Canada, ICAI, FAVA, AMAAS, Storytellers of Canada) and was named Calgary’s Artist of the Month (ICAI, Dec 2021).

Puppet Meltdown Company Spotlight: Sea Beast Puppet Company
Sea Beast’s mission is to promote excellence in puppetry as a theatrical art form — offering audiences of all ages a chance to experience puppetry in all its forms and enriching the community through imaginative storytelling. Founded in 2009 by Artistic Director Kat Pleviak with Mary Kate Jenkins, Sea Beast has created original touring productions for adult and youth audiences — including Surf and Turf, Hans My Hedgehog, Little Red Rosie and the Dragon of Dümm, The History of Light, The Shadow Puppet Conspiracy, and 'Méfiez-Vous de la Vache-Garou'. Beyond touring, Sea Beast offers workshops and professional development in puppetry performance, design, construction, and writing — and presents out-of-town artists via the Puppet Meltdown slam and Oddities: A Curious Collection of Puppetry festival.
