One simple thing every home with a furnace should have working: carbon monoxide detectors.
Put them on every level of the house, especially near sleeping areas, and test them the same way you test your smoke alarms. A furnace that’s burning cleanly and venting properly produces very little CO, but issues like a cracked heat exchanger or blocked flue can change that. The detector is your backup. An annual inspection checks the system itself.
Make sure yours are installed, tested, and not expired. It’s basic protection, same category as working smoke alarms.
