This is also known as and We’ve named her Mary, naturally, and she seems to be loving her new home on our patio. Heliconias are and we will have to come up with a plan for her once the weather begins to change in the Fall.

Do you have toads and frogs in your garden? If you do, congratulations, your ecosystem is working properly! Our hopping friends are one of the most sensitive beings to chemicals and pollution as they breathe and drink through their skin, so any major disturbance will prove fatal. And these puffy beings are amazing to have around for bug control, and they even eat slugs. One frog or toad can eat over 100 bugs during the night, and over 10,000 during the average garden season. I'd much rather have a "knot" of toads (the term for a group of toads) be my pest killer than any of the organic sprays. It's easy to encourage them in the garden, just a bit of shade and dampness is perfect for these mostly nocturnal creatures so their skin doesn't dry out. An overturned terra cotta pot with a hole punched out or a few rocks made into a cave is more than enough for a toad to live in. So the next time you see a toad in your garden, make sure to thank it for all of the hard work!
