Lawn tip for homeowners — and this one affects more yards than people realize:
Thatch is the layer of dead grass stems, roots, and debris that accumulates between the soil surface and the green grass blades. A thin layer (less than half an inch) is actually beneficial — it insulates the soil. More than that and it becomes a problem.
Excessive thatch blocks water and fertilizer from reaching the roots, creates a breeding ground for lawn disease and insects, and causes the spongy, uneven surface that makes a yard feel unkempt even after it's been mowed.
