Landscape tip for the homeowners whose ornamental shrubs are looking rough right now:

The end of August is when drought-stressed shrubs make their most important stand — and the decisions you make this week determine which ones you replace in October.

Signs a shrub is stressed but recoverable: leaves dropping early (the shrub is sacrificing leaves to reduce water demand — survivable), twigs that are flexible and green when scratched with a fingernail at the base.

Signs a shrub may not be recoverable: stems that are brittle and break without bending, brown coloring all the way to the crown, no green visible when bark is scratched.

For stressed but recoverable shrubs: Deep watering directly at the root zone once or twice this week, mulch at 3–4 inches to retain what moisture you add, and patience. Many shrubs that look gone will push new growth once temperatures drop and consistent rain returns.

Did you know the color of your mulch impacts soil temperature? In those scorching Oklahoma summers, dark mulch can actually heat up the soil, stressing out your plants.

Light-colored or natural wood chip mulch is the way to go if you want to keep things cool. And while rubber mulch doesn’t break down like organic options, it traps heat, making it a poor choice in extreme heat.

Picking the right mulch color, depth, and placement really matters during a drought summer!

Deep watering tip: Remember that your shrubs and flower beds need a little extra love during these hot August afternoons. A deep soak twice a week is far more effective than a quick sprinkle. Keep your landscaping thriving!

103 degrees and no rain in the forecast — and here's a landscaping priority conversation that matters in a drought:

Established trees need water before your grass does.

Grass goes dormant in drought and recovers when rain returns. Established trees that die from drought stress are gone — replaced at significant cost and with a decade or more of growth lost.

How to water trees in extreme heat:
A slow soaker hose or drip irrigation placed at the drip line (the outer edge of the canopy — not at the trunk) for 2–3 hours once or twice a week deposits water at the root tips where uptake actually happens.

A tree that's drought-stressed before it looks drought-stressed: leaves wilting in early morning before heat peaks, premature leaf drop, and bark that looks dull rather than healthy.

Protect your trees this week. They are your most valuable landscape assets.

Pro-tip: If you are seeing brown spots in your lawn, it might not just be the heat. Inconsistent watering is often the culprit.
Lawns thrive on a steady, balanced routine that gets even moisture across the whole yard. Depending on how much sunlight or shade different areas get, some spots might need a little extra attention while others need less. Dialing in that schedule can make a huge difference in bringing back that rich, vibrant green.

If you need a hand getting your watering routine set up right, reach out to us and we will be happy to help.

Homeowners in August, a completely accurate timeline:
May: "I'm going to stay on top of the lawn this summer."
June: "We're doing great. Consistent schedule. This is easy."
July: "It's fine. Little dry but fine."
August: staring out the window at the lawn in 100-degree heat wondering where things went wrong
Sound familiar? No judgment. August in Oklahoma is genuinely hard on lawns — and on the people trying to maintain them.
SharpCuts takes the whole thing off your plate. We know what August lawns need and we handle it on a schedule that keeps your yard looking respectable even through the hardest stretch of the summer.
