This image showcases the 1990s expansion of Dulles International Airport's terminal, an architectural evolution of the original design by Eero Saarinen. Not only does this view highlight the careful extension efforts that preserved the integrity of the initial structure, but it also underscores the complex engineering involved. Saarinen's original design utilized innovative cabling strung between concrete "horse heads" to support the roof's unique hyperbolic paraboloid shape. This technique allowed for an expansive, unobstructed interior, which was brilliantly replicated and adapted in the expansions to manage the natural sagging over time and the elevation differences between old and new sections.
