TOTAL TURF BURN DOWN

Sometimes it is best when seeding a lawn to just completely kill off the existing with non selective herbicide. This is mainly done for two reasons, common Bermuda eradication. In this case though, its almost to late in fall for a quality Bermuda kill. The second reason, as with this lawn, there is just not enough fescue or Bermuda to work with. What is standing is mostly w**ds, with several w**d varieties in the harder to control in turf category. It is simply better with this lawn to kill everything off before a seeding project. This will also give better results for w**d control after the new lawn is established.

For a total burn down, we take a lot of extra time with marking. Non selective means just that. The herbicide kills what it hits. We use survey flags along property boarders, and turf paint to mark the area close to shrubbery, or places the boom cannot hit. These areas are sprayed with a hand sprayer. We also utilize a foam marker to ensure precision application.

But what about Bermuda in the flower beds? We also search the beds for Bermuda, and apply another selective herbicide for Bermuda that can be safely applied in the beds. The lawn will never be common Bermuda free. There is Bermuda on all three sides on joining property, however, this extra step will give it a head start.

Important information many of my local friends are unaware of. Anyone can submit thier own soil sample. The normal fee at the moment I believe is $7 for a basic test. There are other options for more extensive testing such as micronutrients for a few dollers more.

I am happy to help with this service as well for our customers, (for a small fee to help cover my time). I can also use the sample pulled and submited from homeowners for recommendations for thier property, (so long as its from a trusted lab, some of the labs from the internet searches can be sketchy, or more interested in marketing expensive products.)

My personal recommendation for home lawn soil testing in West Kentucky medium fertility plan lawns is every five to seven years, and every three to five years for higher fertility plan areas such as upper level estate homes and sports fields.

Lime can be applied any time, but fall is best.

Last years soil testing resulted in 85% of yards tested in Murray recommending lime to correct the soil PH. The lowest PH I see in Murray WILL FALL 5.1 to 5.2. I dont think I personally have ever pulled a sample in the 4's. On the high side, a few will fall 6.8 to 7. Its rare to see them get into the 7's. Most will fall between 5.5 and 6.2.

There are actually several types of grassy w**ds. (This is nowhere near all of them). Some cannot be easily controlled, others require more specialized herbicide than a typical homeowner can easily find on the retail shelf. The easiest way to tell a difference in grasses is in fact the seed head, as this example showes. Unfortunately though, in home lawns on a regular mowing schedule many times the seed head is not present.

I would like to thank the hard working men at Forever Green Lawn And Landscape for thier assistance this morning. I actually had a slight equipment malfunction, ending in my ride on jumping the trailer ramps and getting stuck with the tires mid air. Definitely a problom needing a solution. We tried multiple ways of pushing, or pulling, lifting, ect. Even attempted to use a come a long to free the machine. In the end it was just a problem needing more men and strength than my two hands only. A Forever Green crew was working in a nearby subdivision, and gladly spent part of thier lunch hour coming to my rescue. Four sets of arms are definitely better than one in these situations. In the end, we were able to use Forever Green's stand on skid steer to gently lift the spreader spayer back on the ramps, where it was safely offloaded to the yard.

We have two main sedges in our Western Kentucky lawn and ornamental areas. Yellow Nutsedge, and Falce Green Kyllinga. There are also several other sedges in our area more common to Agriculture fields, that show up on residential properties from time to time. Sedges are a bit harder to control, requiring herbicides specific for sedges. We can help with sedge issues on properties.

I am sometimes ask about ornamental insecticide, mitacide, or fungicide services. We keep a small arsenal of sprayers and equipment strictly designated for these treatments, and glad to help our customers with these applications as needed. We can typically handle the smallest requests of a few plants, as well as large spraying jobs requiring heavier equipment.
