Epoxy… let’s talk about it.
I have been working on the epoxy aspect of this piece for a couple of weeks. Well, 5 layers with 18 hours of time between coats. It was crystal clear with minimal bubbles (little bubbles in the first layer from the wood and again at the arrow - not sure how since it’s fiberglass). But minimal and the piece is awesome. However, I thought I’d polish it because that’s a thing maybe? Ha. Terrible idea. My polishing pad caught a tiny piece of wood and you can imagine, the epoxy became scratched. I worked through all the grits for hours and hours, then polished again. It didn’t meet quality expectations so I did some research. After removing the polish with soap/water and alcohol, I applied a top coat which filled in the tiny scratches and recovered my heart from what was surely going to be a heart attack. The customer is great and this is a one shot project - duh, epoxy - so I want to mail out a perfect product. That sounds weird… every customer deserves a perfect product but this project means a lot to me as well. Once this is cured tomorrow night, I’ll do a gentle round-over on the edges and prep for shipping.
I share this for anyone who has minimal experience with epoxy. Don’t give up. Take a breath and do some more research. Epoxy is workable, whether it’s elbow grease or a fresh top coat. Cheers
