Epoxy… let’s talk about it.

I have been working on the epoxy aspect of this piece for a couple of weeks. Well, 5 layers with 18 hours of time between coats. It was crystal clear with minimal bubbles (little bubbles in the first layer from the wood and again at the arrow - not sure how since it’s fiberglass). But minimal and the piece is awesome. However, I thought I’d polish it because that’s a thing maybe? Ha. Terrible idea. My polishing pad caught a tiny piece of wood and you can imagine, the epoxy became scratched. I worked through all the grits for hours and hours, then polished again. It didn’t meet quality expectations so I did some research. After removing the polish with soap/water and alcohol, I applied a top coat which filled in the tiny scratches and recovered my heart from what was surely going to be a heart attack. The customer is great and this is a one shot project - duh, epoxy - so I want to mail out a perfect product. That sounds weird… every customer deserves a perfect product but this project means a lot to me as well. Once this is cured tomorrow night, I’ll do a gentle round-over on the edges and prep for shipping.

I share this for anyone who has minimal experience with epoxy. Don’t give up. Take a breath and do some more research. Epoxy is workable, whether it’s elbow grease or a fresh top coat. Cheers

Just installed this made-to-fit cherry mantel and hearth. This project was fun as the mantel needed to encase the existing mantel. I was reminded of the woodworking rule of measure twice, cut once, when we originally went to install. My notes said that the inside distance was 2.5 inches yet I had cut 2.25 inches. If you know, you know. I was extremely lucky and only needed to take a quarter inch off in a portion that nobody will ever see of this piece. If a mistake is going to occur, it is best to be with a piece made for a friend. Thank you, Lori Stephens! I appreciate your patience as I corrected the mistake and I am super grateful that it turned out so well.

Our first magnetic knife stand! We are happy with how this turned out. It will be listed on our site later today. This stand has a live edge walnut base and the magnets are contained within hard maple with a walnut facing, topped with cherry. The stand holds three knives. This is also the first product with our logo engraved. ‘Bout time!

After today, we have 6 projects on the board/calendar. Everything is spaced out nicely. We can start your project the last week of February if you get on the board quickly. 😁

Whether it’s a large project such as a coffee table, dining table, end tables for your living room or nightstands for your bedroom, we’re just a consult away. I hired one of my sons to be an apprentice in the shop and wow this young man has an eye for detail during the design process. We enjoy small projects as well!

We haven’t posted in a month. Kind of like that silence around the dinner table when everyone is too busy eating a great meal. 😁

We have been busy completing projects for our wonderful clients. Here are a few smaller projects we enjoyed making. We have a big range of custom work we can create. For instance, I installed two custom walnut shelves in a client’s garage/shop and this weekend, my son and I installed a storage room at a local business.

Our schedule is packed through the end of February but we have availability in March to start new custom work. Message us through our website https://www.saw406.com with project ideas and we can make your creative thoughts come to life.

Week one went well and we are now in week two of full-time SAW. After a high production week, I have some general maintenance on equipment to complete so we are calling today maintenance Monday.

Day 1 of full time SAW. About to clock in for a 9am-6pm shift. Got a few things done early this morning. Jordan woke me up at 4:30am to hit the gym. I made us breakfast and then I went to register my son’s vehicle since he’s only 17. Tested some repairs on the CNC as I have a few projects that require it. Most of the day will be spent at the table saw, jointer and drum sander. Finally, my other 17 year old will help with tightening up the shop so we can install an insurance-friendly heating source. Good stuff ahead!
