It’s almost time for the first application of the year! Soil temperatures are rising over the next two weeks which is when I will be doing the first round of our 5 and 7 step programs. This application includes broadleaf post emergent w**d control, pre emergent w**d control, and some fertilizer to get the grass ready for the growing season. Timing for this application is super important. Crabgrass germinates when soil temperatures average 55 degrees for 3 or more days. To get the most out of pre-emergent products, it is important to make these applications right when the soil temperatures average 55 degrees for 3 or more days; or just after it reaches this mark. Too early with this application and the pre-emergent won’t have the longevity to get you through the season w**d free. Too late with this application and the crabgrass or other annual w**ds will already be established and had time to mature rendering the pre-emergent ineffective. Now these statements are true with some products, while other products have a little more flexibility. For example, a pre-emergent with the active ingredient Prodiamine has no post-emergent control on annual w**ds. So applying this before w**d germination is super important. I will be using Dimension which has pre-emergent control and some post-emergent control on juvenile crabgrass. So when using Dimension (active ingredient dithiopyr) as your pre-emergent, there is a larger window to make this application without reducing its effectiveness.
