The Garfield Park Conservatory on Chicago's West Side is one of the largest conservatories in the country, and it is free.

Jens Jensen designed it, and that is the reason it matters. Jensen was the leading figure in the Prairie style of landscape architecture, and when the city consolidated three smaller West Side conservatories into one in 1906, he rejected the standard approach entirely. Victorian conservatories of that era were arrangements of plants in beds and pots, essentially outdoor gardening moved indoors.

Jensen built landscapes instead.

The exterior is shaped like a haystack, meant to echo Midwestern farm forms. Inside, the Fern Room is the piece people talk about. Jensen designed it as an interpretation of what Illinois looked like in prehistoric times, with a lagoon, stratified stone ledges and water running over them. The stonework was laid to mimic natural rock outcrops and the water sounds carry through the whole space. Nobody had done anything like it in a greenhouse before.

The Palm House holds towering specimens under glass. The Desert House, the Aroid House, the Show House and Sugar from the Sun cover the rest, along with an outdoor garden and a children's garden.

The Aroid House now holds a Chihuly installation, Persian Lily, floating on the water.

The building has taken real damage over the years. A 2011 hailstorm destroyed a huge share of the glass panes and closed sections for years while repairs ran. It has come back.

The context matters too. Garfield Park is in East Garfield Park, a neighborhood that has been through disinvestment and struggle for decades, and the conservatory has functioned as an anchor and a point of pride. The Green Line stops right outside.

In January, walking off a Chicago street into eighty-degree humidity under palms is a specific kind of relief.

No admission charge, though donations are asked and reservations are sometimes required.

Please stay safe and heed weather warnings in the hours and days ahead. Unfortunately, this was to be my last Fox Pointe market appearance for the season as I return to my full-time teaching duties Wednesday. I absolutely loved meeting everyone at this market and look forward to being a full-season vendor next year. You can continue to find me at Homewood’s farmers market in downtown Homewood Saturdays 8am-1pm through October 10.

Tomorrow’s Fox Pointe Farmers Market has been canceled due to the weather expected to move through the area overnight and continue into tomorrow morning. The safety of our vendors, guests and staff is our top priority.

We’ll be back to our regularly scheduled Farmers Market next Tuesday, August 18, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., with live music from Chris Peters!

Stay tuned next week for a look at the fresh produce you can expect to find at the market. We’ll see you Tuesday! 🌽🍅

I’m excited to see you tomorrow!

No Homewood market Saturday. See you at Lansing’s NIGHT Out at Fox Pointe Tuesday, August 4, 5pm-8pm, and then at Homewood’s Farmers Market next Saturday, August 8, 8am-1pm!

The Village of Homewood has made the difficult decision to cancel the Homewood Farmers Market this Saturday, August 1, 2026.

Due to predicted heavy rainfall and in consideration of those who are still recovering from the recent storm damage, the Homewood Farmers Market will not operate this Saturday, August 1, 2026. Please share with family and friends who may have planned to attend.

The Homewood Farmers Market is scheduled to return to Martin Square on Saturday, August 8, 2026.

As always, check with our page for future updates.

Thank you.
