Another successful hardscape restoration completed by Above the Barr Property Maintenance

Due to significant settlement over the years caused by poor underlying substrate and improper base preparation, this existing walkway and retaining wall system required a complete reconstruction to restore both structural integrity and appearance. Portions of the wall had settled and crumbled considerably, requiring us to raise sections nearly 18 inches to properly meet the elevation of the existing roadway and ensure a smooth, functional transition and drainage.

Our team began by carefully dismantling the existing brick walkway while preserving and reusing the original pavers to maintain the property’s original character. After removing the failed base material, we installed a new compacted base foundation, properly graded and leveled the walkway, and reset the brick for a clean, durable, long-lasting finish.

We then reconstructed both retaining wall wings, one measuring approximately 25 feet and the other nearly 40 feet in length. Following excavation of the failed substrate, the entire base was replaced with 304 processed gravel to establish a solid structural foundation. Each course of wall block was wet set in high-strength concrete to ensure maximum stability and longevity, while the capstones were mortared in place to provide a clean, finished appearance. As part of raising the wall elevation, we also installed an additional granite step to properly accommodate the new grade change and improve access.

To complete the transformation, we refreshed the landscape beds with 4 yards of premium red mulch and installed 3 decorative accent stones to enhance curb appeal and tie the entire project together.

After allowing the concrete pad to properly cure for 14 days, we were finally able to get the anchors set and the posts installed for this customer’s new 9,000 lb car lift.

Now their workshop is fully functional and ready to make the most of the space. Another clean install completed and built to last.

🌧️ Rainy days are perfect for getting indoor projects done!

Today’s project was all about creating a safe, durable foundation for a 9,000 lb automotive lift installation.

After inspecting the existing concrete, we found the slab was too inconsistent and not structurally suitable to safely support the lift. Cutting corners on a project like this simply isn’t an option.
Here’s what we completed:

✅ Cut and removed a 6’ x 4’ section of the existing slab
✅ Excavated and removed 10 inches of unsuitable material/debris
✅ Installed 4 inches of 304 processed gravel
✅ Fully compacted the base for maximum stability
✅ Built and installed a #4 rebar reinforcement cage
✅ Installed dowels for proper slab integration
✅ Poured 6 inches of 5,000 PSI reinforced concrete

We’ll be honest — this approach is a bit of overkill compared to what you typically see. Many contractors might cut out the slab, pour 4 inches of concrete, and call it done.

That’s just not how we operate.
The bare minimum doesn’t sit right with us. We go above and beyond to ensure strength, safety, and long-term performance — especially when it comes to supporting heavy equipment like a car lift.

The result: a properly engineered slab built to handle the demands of a 9,000 lb lift, the right way.
