Crape Myrtles have taken a beating this year. Aphids, and scale have wreaked havoc on these plants. If you are not paying attention, they can and will kill otherwise perfectly health trees. It’s always cheaper to prevent damage than to replace.

Dollar spot is now in the high risk category in our area. We’re looking at 55% of all yards dealing with this disease in our area. Keep an eye out. Our yards should still look healthy and green. We’re not in dormancy yet.

Recent changes in weather conditions have increased our forecast of turf destroying dollar spot by 20% over the next week.

Did you know? Soil temps and moisture content determine when w**ds show up and how long they stay. The lack of rain caused our temps to sky rocket well above historical averages in August. Since it has started raining, the temps are now well below the average. This is why we’ve seen an abundance of w**ds recently. Yards that suffer from drought are more susceptible to pests and w**ds in this scenario. When we hit 5 days of 70 avg it’s time to prevent winter w**ds and fungus. We are headed that direction quickly and faster than previous years!!!

Say no to Mulch Volcanos!!! Black mulch is the worst offender, but used more frequently due to its low price and looks.

Just say no to "Volcano Mulching."

Mulch should never be piled up in a mound around the base of the trunk. Piling the mulch deeply around the base of the trunk exposes the trunk to dark, moist conditions. Decay organisms can take advantage and invade the trunk.

When mulching trees, the mulch should be spread out in a flat disk about 2 to 4 inches deep and pulled back slightly from the trunk. As the mulch thins out and decays, add more mulch as necessary.

Not only does this protect trees from string trimmers, but keeping the area mulched and free from grass encourages faster growth on young trees. Research indicates that in some cases, trees that were mulched grew twice as fast as trees that were not.

What is the No. 1 w**d problem around the world? Answer: nutsedges, and they are a formidable foe! You have likely struggled with this w**d in your lawn or garden beds.

There are two main types of nutsedges: yellow nutsedge (Cyperus esculentus) and purple nutsedge (Cyperus rotundus). Although commonly called nutsedge, the w**ds don’t actually bear a nut, but they do produce small brown tubers that have a nutlike appearance.

Perhaps the main reason that sedges are so difficult to control is there’s more than one way for them to reproduce. Nutsedges spread in three ways: by underground tubers and by rhizomes that then produce more tubers. This is called vegetative growth, and it is extremely aggressive in sedges.
