The temperatures are falling… and so are the leaves. 🍂

My preference is to keep excess leaves out of my active garden beds so I’m not creating extra hiding places for slugs and snails.

But that does not mean those leaves are waste.

They go straight to the compost pile, where they can break down and eventually come back to the garden as rich organic matter for next season.

So today’s quick win is simple:

Don’t throw away your fall leaves. Put them to work.

A little cleanup now can help build better soil later. 🌱

What do you do when the garden gives you more than you can possibly keep up with? 😂

Today’s harvest added to an overflow fridge that was already full of okra.

I’ve eaten it.
I’ve given it away.
I’ve sold it.
And somehow… I still have okra.

So today, we’re pulling out the Ball canning and preserving book and turning the extra harvest into okra pickles using a tried-and-true tested recipe.

It gives us another way to enjoy the harvest later, and it also happens to make a great homemade gift as the holidays get closer.

Because sometimes the goal is not growing more.

Sometimes the goal is figuring out what to do with everything you successfully grew. 🌱

“I have a black thumb.”

I hear some version of this at almost every market.

Usually it comes right after someone tells me about the plants they’ve killed, the garden they tried once, or why they’ve decided they’re just “not good at gardening.”

And my answer is pretty simple:

We can fix that — if you want to learn.

Most people aren’t bad at gardening. They just haven’t learned how to match the right plant with the right season, give it the conditions it needs, and recognize what it’s telling them before something goes wrong.

Those are learnable skills.

You don’t need to know everything before you start. You just need to be willing to learn what your garden needs.

That’s a big part of what I do as a garden consultant — help take the guessing out of gardening so you can actually enjoy growing something.

Want a quick garden win?

Start with a plant someone else already started for you.

You skip the slowest, most delicate part of the process and get straight to growing.

So if you’re short on time, new to gardening, or convinced you have a black thumb, buy the transplant.

Get it in the ground. Keep it watered. Let it grow.

There’s plenty of time to learn seeds later.

And yes — this is exactly why I keep garden-ready plants in the nursery. 🌱
