I’ve always had this little vision for my work - homes that felt personal, encouraging, and thoughtful, with a coastal + surf inspired twist. and I knew I wanted the design process to feel that way too. no ego, no fancy word salad.

I wish I had more videos of architecture school trying me, HA! if anyone is familiar with architecture school or the typical architect vibe (no hate at all) but you know that’s noooot me!

it was abstract projects! commercial studios! all nighters! Revit crashes! plotting disasters! and all the ✨character development✨ during critiques that came with being the total opposite of what architecture school wanted me to be

there were definitely moments of “is this really for me??” but thankfully that vision never left.

and by God’s grace, neither did the grit 🤍

to be honest, I almost posted a completely different moodboard today.

it was insanely beautiful. like… insanely beautiful. but something about it just didn’t sit right with me.

which actually made me think about something from way back when I first started talking about Salt - before I even started the company. I told someone I wanted to focus on coastal homes and they were like “oh, aren’t you going to limit yourself and your clients?”

and my immediate thought was… well, yeah? lol

not because I thought coastal clients would come running or because I wanted to put myself in a little box. it just made sense to me.

it’s what I have an eye for. what I love. what I’m good at. and ultimately, where I know I can serve my clients best.

there are SO many beautiful styles and ways to design a home, but I don’t think you have to be everything to everyone.

anyway… all that to say, I’m glad I listened to the little voice that said “ehhh this one isn’t really us” because now I leave you with this stunner that abbbbsolutely is.

I think I’m officially calling this one the surf ranch :)

somewhere between a California surf house + a western ranch, butttt what I found while studying this concept is that those two worlds are actually way more intertwined than I realized!

both are rooted in natural materials, weathered woods, visible structure + all those little imperfections that make a material feel lived in. board formed concrete was a big one here: concrete formed using wood boards so once the forms come off, you’re left with that beautiful wood grain imprint in the concrete. seriously… a work of art all on its own.

and then there’s the water :)

this home is sprawled out across the site, but the architecture itself creates privacy, while this incredible lap pool runs through the middle of it all. you catch glimpses of the water from just about everywhere, and it becomes part of the material palette of the home - bringing in that natural element (water lol) and giving the whole thing a little more of that true surf feel.

I also love how both the western + surf influences show up in the structure. lots of natural beams, exposed structure, materials that aren’t trying to hide every little imperfection… things that feel like they’ve been there awhile and are meant to be lived in.

butttt still elevated. :)

and honestly, you can really dive into the floor plan on this one and start to see all the little details tucked into it. there are SO many that I haven’t even touched on yet. the primary suite wing + wellness spaces, or the CUTIE little Raili Clasen | Raili CA Design inspired moment in the pool 🤎

I cannot tell you enough how inspired I am by her + her work. truly one of those designers whose work makes you want to go back and just be true to you and what you love.

I really love when you find something and think oh that is SO me. like you don’t even think twice about whether anyone else likes it, it’s just perfect to you!!

could be a chair, a pair of jeans, a weird little painting, a coffee table, a lamp, whatever. You see it and you’re like “yep, you’rrree coming home with me!”

and I think the best homes are kind of the same way. they’re just a collection of your favorite things. not necessarily things that all “go together” perfectly or that everyone else would pick, but things that you’ve collected because you genuinely love them and they feel like you. that’s a space that lights you up! and that carries through the architecture as well! a charming window that greets you every morning or an entry way that gives you a sigh of relief every time you walk in 🤎

and this house specifically… you just know there’s a pitcher of fresh mint lemonade sitting on that back porch waiting for a wholesome chat and some really good life advice 🤌🏼

honestly, my favorite kind of home to design. one where you walk in and can immediately tell what the people who live there love !!

you know how we were talking about non-work-related hobbies? wellllll this one is definitely work-related, HA!

I keep coming back to this house - something about the mix of old + new, the proportions, the simplicity of the forms… it’s just so good.

when a house really sticks with me, I love sketching it. there’s something about drawing it out that makes you slow down and really study the proportions + little details that make the whole thing work.

I think that constant study makes designing feel more intuitive - it gives me a larger library of ideas to pull from while still keeping everything grounded in the right scale, proportions + relationship to the whole.

so naturally I had to sketch this one..:)

the little things you do every day, the things that drive you crazy, the things you wish were easier, the things you’ve just gotten used to doing a certain way.

the wishlist is only the starting point. the real design opportunities are usually hiding in the details.

so tell me all of it. the weird stuff is the good stuff :)

okay but the real question is… what are we getting for dinner tonight because after standing on a job site in this heat all i can think about is a giant bowl of ice cold watermelon 😂

maybe watermelon + a big greek salad?? or a little sushi situation?? what’s something cold + refreshing but still an actual DINNER lol

I actually love days like this though. there’s something about getting out of the office and seeing everything we’ve been drawing + talking about start to become a real house that never gets old. thankfully, I’ve had the chance to work on some pretty incredible homes over the years, and SO much of what I do now comes from those experiences. you learn SO much once you’re actually watching a house come together - things you just don’t learn sitting at a desk or in architecture school.

you start to understand how all those little decisions on paper actually translate into the finished house, and you get to learn from the people who are actually building it. some of my favorite lessons have come from superintendents + contractors who have been doing this forever. which is also probably why I can’t seem to walk away from a job site without checking something one last time 😂

your house is your home, but the work we do is something I want to be really proud to stand behind.

anywayyyy! it is hot and I am hungry. back to the important things: figuring out what sounds good for dinner when it is approximately 900 degrees outside.

think: old-world charm, collected interiors, warm wood, creamy plaster, a little bit of patina, and absolutely nothing that feels too new or “done.”🕯️

the inspiration here is all about those quiet little details… the antique doors, unlacquered brass, aged stone, hand-finished plaster, vintage lighting, wood beams, pretty little moments of pattern, and that slightly imperfect European feeling that makes a house feel collected instead of decorated.

basically… English countryside meets Southern charm meets a really good antique store. 😌

warm, layered, a little moody, a little romantic, annnnd very much Salt Design Co 🤍
