A well-built home starts with a well-coordinated plan.

In this video, I’m reviewing the HVAC design package Ryan Rush with [email protected] prepared for one of our homes. The level of detail deserves a closer look.

The file includes 3D renderings showing how the ductwork fits into the house, along with the placement of HVAC equipment, dehumidifiers, and energy recovery ventilators (ERVs). It gives the installation team a clear understanding of how the system is intended to come together.

Planning a home brings together the clients’ vision, the architect’s design, the engineer’s expertise, and the trades who carry out the work. Ryan plays a crucial role in that process because the homes we build are systems, and those systems need to work together.

Detailed plans reduce guesswork, help us resolve conflicts before installation, and give skilled installers the information they need to execute the design properly.

The right information in the right hands makes a measurable difference. This is part of what goes into building a healthy, high-performance home—long before the thermostat is turned on.

It’s loud—but please watch and listen to the entire video. The difference is something you can hear.

Our drywall crew has the music turned up while they work. As I walk just a few feet away from the speaker, listen to how much the sound changes. This is a large, open space with no doors separating these areas. Follow me upstairs, and listen again.

This walkthrough gives you a real jobsite example of the acoustic difference we’re noticing with the blown-in American Rockwool mineral wool insulation installed throughout the home—even before the drywall is complete.

Comfort goes beyond temperature. How sound carries through a home deserves attention, too.

Day one of drywall installation, and the results speak for themselves.

Our mineral wool insulation video prompted several comments suggesting the insulation would cause bulging drywall or uneven walls. This follow-up shows the drywall going up flat and even, with no signs of the issues people anticipated.

Proper insulation installation and careful drywall preparation both matter. We pay attention to those details before the walls are covered, and today’s progress shows that work coming together as planned.

We’ll continue sharing the installation as it progresses so you can see the results firsthand.

A home is a system, designed and crafted on purpose.

Walk with me from the insulated garage to the mechanical attic above it, then upstairs, where the insulation continues from the first-floor walls all the way to the roofline.

The garage walls and ceiling are insulated, while the conditioned mechanical attic above is separated from the garage air. Inside the home’s conditioned envelope, our HVAC equipment, ductwork, and water heaters operate in a temperature-controlled environment.

Why does that matter? A conventional attic can reach 140°F or more in summer. Keeping mechanical systems out of that extreme heat helps reduce energy losses and supports comfort, performance, and long-term durability.

Together with careful air sealing, controlled ventilation, and humidity management, this is how we build for healthier living and exceptional energy efficiency.

The details behind the walls matter just as much as the finishes you see.

Day six of mineral wool insulation, and we’re approaching the finish line.

Walking through this living room with ceilings over 20 feet tall, you can appreciate how clean and consistent the installation looks. During spray foam application, I couldn’t walk through the house like this without the required protective equipment.

We’re using blown-in mineral wool behind netting, with mineral wool batts carefully fitted into areas where the netted system is difficult to install. The crew is finishing the garage walls and ceilings and expects to wrap up today.

Before drywall begins, we’ll inspect everything to verify that the installation follows the manufacturer’s instructions and project plans.

Step two on our pocket doors.

A few weeks ago, we installed the pocket frames. Today, our carpenters are installing the doors before drywall so we can get everything aligned for the trimless finish—no casing around the openings.

What I love most is how smoothly these doors open and close. The system feels solid and sturdy, and the operation is effortless.

There’s still a little movement in the door at this stage because the remaining components and final adjustments aren’t complete yet. We’ll revisit them once everything is finished so you can see the final result.

The details—and the order we build them in—matter.

A healthy home starts with what goes inside the walls.

In this video, we follow American Rockwool Manufacturing’s loose-fill mineral wool from the pallet to the blowing machine, through the hose, and into the wall cavities behind the netting installed by R&R Insulators.

The label tells you why we chose it: no added chemicals, formaldehyde, glues, or solvents. Fire resistance is another reason this material belongs in our high-performance homes.

Choosing the material is only part of the job. Installing it properly matters just as much. Every step is done on purpose, because the details you won’t see after drywall deserve just as much attention as the finishes you will.

“Why are you priming James Hardie siding that already comes factory-primed? Isn’t that wasteful?”

We do it because proper preparation matters. Primer is one of the most important steps in getting the finish we expect, and a full coat is part of our process on every home we paint.

I always say 80% of painting is prep work. The final color is what you see, but the preparation underneath deserves just as much attention.

We follow the paint manufacturer’s instructions and take the time to get it right. Every step has a purpose. That’s how we build.

Building science comes first. Beauty follows. We build for both.

With insulation still underway, our trim carpenters are already installing interior doors. Getting ahead of ourselves? This detail calls for it.

These doors have no casing, so the drywall must meet each jamb precisely. Setting the doors now lets us check alignment and prepare for that clean, seamless finish.

The finished look begins with decisions made long before you see it.

A clean paint job starts before the first coat.

Day three of exterior paint prep, and the crew is putting in the time where it counts—caulking the appropriate joints, preparing surfaces, and carefully masking the windows and everything else that needs protection from overspray.

That same attention to detail guides our construction sequence. The metal roof will be installed after exterior painting is complete so its finish stays clean and pristine.

Quality comes from thoughtful preparation, careful protection, and doing the work in the right order.
