Water safety is being mandated. These before and after pictures show the difference between being in compliance and not being in compliance. The backflow preventer is a device that stops contaminated water from reversing flow and mixing with the public water supply. This device senses pressure on the incoming supply and back pressure from the inside of a building. It’s much like a turnstile. It only lets the incoming supply in and a valve closes. Also, if there is a loss of pressure on the city supply, a valve closes. A vacuum is created on the city side when there is a water main break. Water inside the building doesn’t back wash into the city water supply. After 911 there has been a major push to install backflow preventers in apartment buildings, commercial buildings and restaurants, to protect our water supply. As you can see, this building did not meet the mandates handed down by our government to the water companies. Ironically, this is a government building. Should have been in compliance years ago.
