If you fought ice dams last winter, you already know how this goes. The ridge of ice builds up along the roof edge, water backs up under your shingles, and it finds its way inside.

Here is the thing folks miss. You cannot fix that in January. Heat tape has to go in before the cold, gutters have to be corrected before they freeze, and the roofline work has to happen while we can still get up there safely.

That means the window to fix it for good is open right now, and it closes in early fall.

It is not just for looks, it lets you see cracks and gaps. Peek in the attic. You are looking for daylight, moisture, or a stain you have not seen before.

Your gutters are the thing nobody thinks about until they are the only thing you can think about.

Fall debris packs them. Rain overflows them. Then winter freezes the whole mess solid and that weight rips them right off the fascia. Now you are not fixing a gutter, you are fixing the wood behind it.

One good hailstorm can bruise a roof in ways you will never spot from the driveway.

It does not always punch a hole. It knocks the granules loose, it bruises the mat underneath, and it breaks the seal that holds your shingles down. Your roof looks completely normal from the ground. Then eight months later you have got a stain on the ceiling and no idea where it came from.
