Demo day

Sometimes the finished product doesn't tell you much about the work it took to get there.

This one started with termite damage around the front entry of the home. Once the concrete porch was removed and everything was opened up, we were able to see the extent of the damage and start putting it back together the right way.

Before removing the damaged structure, we built temporary support walls to carry the house and foyer floor while we worked. From there, damaged double joists, rim joist and additional floor framing were removed and replaced, new joist hangers were installed, and a couple of joists at the rear of the house were reinforced as well.

While we had access, we also addressed the original basement stairs. New walls were framed along both sides and the stair structure was reinforced.

Then came putting the house back together: waterproofing membrane, insulation, new structural sheathing, flashing and water-management details, new LP siding and trim, and a new Therma-Tru double entry door with a multipoint locking system.

The old porch was replaced with new concrete, the interior and exterior were repaired and painted, and we finished things off with a new Andersen double storm-door system.

There are a lot of stages between the first picture and the last one.

The best part of a repair like this is that when it's finished, you shouldn't be able to tell how much work happened underneath it.

Most of the pictures I post are finished projects. You don't usually get to see the mistakes.

Well, here's one.

While installing the shower glass on this bathroom remodel, I misinterpreted part of the installation instructions and drilled a 1/2" hole in a brand-new Wolf shower wall panel — in the wrong place.

Not a great feeling.

My first thought was figuring out how to repair it without the repair looking like a repair. And, if that couldn't be done, I was prepared to replace the entire panel. It was my mistake, so making it right was my responsibility.

Interestingly, while I was stressing over different repair options, my client suggested something I hadn't considered: Could we make a plug out of one of the leftover pieces of the panel?

That turned out to be the answer.

I made a matching plug from a scrap of the original panel, epoxied it into the hole, carefully sanded everything flush, then worked through progressively finer abrasives and polished the high-gloss finish back out.

The client was happy with the result, and so was I.

I'm not sharing this because I'm proud that I drilled a hole in the wrong place. I'm sharing it because mistakes occasionally happen when you're building things in the real world.

What matters is what happens next.

If I make the mistake, I own it. And I'll put in the time, effort and expense necessary to make it right — even if that means replacing something and starting over.

Sometimes the tile isn't the problem...

This shower was only two years old (not installed be me) when the homeowner contacted me because the shower floor felt soft near the drain. The grout had cracked, water was leaking through the shower pan, and understandably, they were frustrated.
From the outside, it looked like it might be a simple shower pan replacement.

Once demolition began, we discovered the real causes:
🔹 The shower was built over 1/2" subfloor where the manufacturer recommends 3/4" minimum.
🔹 There was an approximately 8" × 30" section of missing subfloor beneath the drain area.
🔹 One of the floor joists had been cut approximately 50% through to accommodate the plumbing.
🔹 The drain plumbing contained two P-traps, which required correction.

With inadequate support beneath the shower pan, the floor flexed under normal use. Over time, that movement cracked the grout, allowed water intrusion, and eventually led to the failure the homeowner experienced.

Rather than simply replacing the visible components, we rebuilt the structure beneath the shower:

✔ Reinforced the floor framing. ✔ Corrected the drain plumbing. ✔ Installed new structural subfloor meeting the manufacturer's requirements. ✔ Installed a new Wedi shower pan, Click & Seal drain, and waterproofing system. ✔ Restored the tile so the repair blends seamlessly with the existing shower.

The finished shower looks much like it did before—but what matters most is what you can't see.

As contractors, it's tempting to focus on the finished tile, paint, or fixtures. But long-term performance depends on the framing, plumbing, subfloor, waterproofing, and following the manufacturer's installation requirements.

That's the kind of work we take pride in at Indy Home Repair. We believe lasting repairs start by finding and correcting the root cause—not just treating the symptoms.

If you're experiencing a leaking shower, cracked grout, or loose tile, don't assume the tile is the problem. Sometimes the real issue is hidden beneath the surface.

Another master bathroom transformation completed in just 7 working days.

This project included:

✔ Removal of the existing fiberglass shower and garden tub
✔ New Onyx Collection solid surface shower system
✔ Custom shower niches and corner shelving
✔ New luxury vinyl flooring throughout
✔ Updated plumbing fixtures and bathroom fan
✔ Drywall, trim, electrical, and paint
✔ Conversion of the former garden tub area into a functional vanity/desk space

The custom shower glass has been ordered and will be installed as soon as it arrives, but the room is already completely transformed.

One of the biggest improvements was removing the oversized garden tub. The new shower is larger, easier to use, and the reclaimed floor space gives the homeowners a dedicated area for a future vanity or desk.

Demo day in my new office.

Added some custom arches to soften up these openings and give the space a little more character and flow.

This one took a mix of framing, layout, drywall work, patience, and a lot of sanding to make them look like they’ve always been there.

Subtle architectural details like this can completely change the feel of a home without moving a single wall.

4 days into this master bathroom rebuild and the “hidden” work is finally taking shape.

What began as a failed flipped bathroom quickly turned into major corrective work once demo exposed:

- improperly cut floor joists
- failed shower construction
- inadequate waterproofing
- structural movement causing cracked tile

Over the past several days we’ve:
✔ repaired and reinforced framing
✔ corrected plumbing issues
✔ updated electrical
✔ rebuilt the subfloor properly
✔ stabilized the floor system
✔ prepared the shower area correctly for the new waterproof shower system

Today we poured self-leveler over reinforced metal lath to create a solid foundation for the new Schluter shower system.

None of this is the glamorous part of remodeling… but this is the work that actually matters.

Beautiful tile means nothing if the structure underneath is wrong. 🔨

What started as a bathroom remodel quickly turned into a full structural correction project.

The homeowners already knew this recently flipped bathroom had problems:

* cracked tile floors
* a failing shower
* movement throughout the room

Once demo began, we found out why.

The shower had been built over drywall with no proper waterproofing system. The shower pan was incorrectly constructed, the liner installation was wrong, and several floor joists had been heavily cut for plumbing modifications.

This is the reality of many fast “flip” remodels — the finished product may look beautiful on the surface, but what’s underneath tells the real story.

The goal of this project was never to simply cover things back up. It was to uncover the failures, correct the structure, and rebuild the bathroom the right way from the ground up.

Now the real work begins. 🔨
