Why You Should Never Level a Lawn With Sand
Do not use sand to level your lawn, even though it is the easy grab at the hardware store. Here is why it works against you.
Sand does not blend with the clay soil that most yards around here already have. Instead of mixing in, it can form a separate layer that actually blocks water and roots from moving through the ground, so your low spots stay weak instead of filling in.
Topsoil is the better choice. It matches the soil already there, blends in naturally, and gives the grass something real to root into as it recovers.
So for filling and leveling low spots, reach for topsoil, not sand. Same work, much better result. Save this before your next leveling project, and follow the page for more simple lawn tips.
