How Window Pelmets Prevent Convective Heat Loss

This visual comparison illustrates the thermal behavior of indoor air around a curtained window during cold weather, with and without a pelmet. Unblocked curtain tops allow warm air to enter the gap behind the curtain, where it contacts cold glass, cools down, and sinks to form a continuous draught. Adding a pelmet creates a physical seal at the top of the curtain track, interrupting this convection cycle and retaining indoor warmth.

Standard Open Rail: Allows warm room air to freely spill over the top of the curtain and enter the cold window cavity.

Pelmet Enclosure: Seals off the top boundary above the curtain track, preventing warm air infiltration into the window space.
