Email [email protected] The purpose of my WHY I LOVE NATIONAL GUITARS page is, first, to celebrate the rich culture of blues, jazz, folk and roots music, some of which is played on Nationals, and some is not. I love the deep and wonderful heritage and history of the music, which is an endless inspiration to me and, I hope, to others. The page was start

ed over a decade ago and has been built into a rewarding and fun place to enjoy and share the music, and the guitars, that legendary and obscure artists have brought to the world. I do feature many National guitars and National-playing artists, modern and vintage. But really, it is the music and lives of the musicians that I show here, primarily.

I DO sell every new National Reso-Phonic (and Scheerhorn, made by National) instrument made, and have a few excellent-to-mint condition used Nationals as well. And Fairbanks Guitars, and some other gems. I have the world’s biggest stock, often around 30 different models in stock and ready to ship, and hundreds of Nationals on order. Because I have so many guitars on order, all can be customized for you, and your ETA will usually be many months sooner than if you order a new National “from scratch.”

This just in: new National Reso-Phonic STYLE 1 TRICONE with custom Style O etching (usually seen on the single cone Style O), and featuring a Deluxe neck, which has a Pearloid, engraved headstock overlay and matching Pearloid heelcap. Ivoroid bound Ebony fingerboard with dot inlays on Mahogany neck. Nickel plated brass body classic tricone. Bell-like tone with the endless sustain. National Reso-Phonic BARITONE Guitars. The photo on the left are some of my own Baritones: 2014 Gold Dueco Tricone Baritone, 1999 Polychrome Tricone Baritone, 2003 Estralita Deluxe Baritone and 2011 M1 Baritone.

The two photos on the right are of an M1 BARITONE TRICONE from 2012, which has been fully refurbished and refinished by National. In stock, and ready for a good home.

WHY A BARITONE? I first played one down at King Biscuit Blues Festival in 1998; National founders Don Young, McGregor and Marie Gaines invited us down to be part of the National booth they had at the old railroad station there in Helena, Arkansas.

I'd been tuning my regular scale guitars lower, to C, but wanted to go lower, and the guitars couldn't handle it very well; I was breaking strings like crazy, and having trouble staying in tune. They had one of the Baritone prototypes there for me to try, and it was a revelation. I'd finally found what I needed to achieve the sounds I wanted to make.

Once I got my own, first Baritone in 1999, it opened up a whole new world for me. The Baritone became my primary slide and open tuning guitar voice. I tune them to Open Bb (like Open D, just lower) and Open Eb (like Open G or Spanish, just lower). The guitars have a 27" scale and meet the body at the 13th fret. The strings are fatter: .068 to .017. I know that sounds impossibly huge but they feel good and are still bendable. Great full, wide and super deep sonic range, and those keys were better for my voice.

Baritones are not for everybody, but they can be a great tool in your resophonic toolbox...they sound good too tuned to B or C, in a variety of tunings. I use mine mostly playing solo, but I've seen others, like Mike Dowling, use them accompanying other musicians. Hope that helps!

I got a cool and unusual "New Old Stock" guitar coming in this week, from National Reso-Phonic:
~ STYLE 1 TRICONE with a Deluxe neck and STYLE O-style etching. So, the same etched classic tropical scene as a Style O 12 Fret (pictured, also one coming soon), but on a Style 1, brass-bodied tricone. The neck is Mahogany, with Ivoroid headstock overlay, and diamond shaped inlays on a bound Ebony fingerboard. Same price as a new stock Style 1.
~ STYLE O 14 FRET REPLICON - The most famous National model in the world. This is based on the 1936/37 Style Os, with patina finish. In stock now!
~ 2022 STYLE 1 ANTIQUE BRASS TRICONE CUTAWAY w/ Slimline pickup installed and Waverly Black Pearl Tuners. Amazing tricone with total fingerboard access, sounds and plays fantastic, like new, preowned, Mint condition. Nice price.
~ TRIOLIAN W-SERIES TRICONE - Walnut burst finish on steel bodied tricone with Maple neck. Stunning with bonk and splang and sweet sustain.
