Hello friends! The MSMSA is hosting a symposium to discuss how to create safer digital spaces for today’s youth. Please join us this Friday!

Michele Lothschutz, a Digital Safety Specialist, will equip us with the tools needed to create safe, balanced digital environments and empower our youth to become responsible users of technology. This symposium is open to the public and will include a tour of the new KRESA Career Connect Campus.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Michele is a mother of four children, ranging in age from middle school to college. After a career in sales, she pivoted to raising her children full-time and working in their schools. She saw the digital demands that are placed on our children and the impact of
technology that influences our parenting. Through her interactive and engaging presentations, she hopes to connect with parents who may be feeling isolated and
overwhelmed. Her goal is to infuse confidence into parents so they can feel more equipped and empowered in guiding their children to be responsible users of technology in their homes.

Dear K**A Friends, Welcome to September! It is hard to believe the Autumn season has begun. So many firsts today...K**A’s annual meeting was held and new officers installed via Zoom. Plenty of tears were shed as incoming President Suzy Berndt was installed from her newborn baby girl’s hospital room. What a meeting! Congratulations to all of our officers and a big thank you to outgoing President Patty Kenter for a wonderful year 💙 We are grateful for our K**A community now more than ever.

The On Being Project is a media and public life initiative that explores what it means to be human, how we want to live and who we will be to each other. This is a package of content they recently assembled for the larger Heath Care Community—please enjoy and share with your partners too!

An offering of poetry, podcasts, and meditations to accompany a time of crisis.

I'm sure many of you have heard either from your spouse or the news that the supply of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is not expected to meet the demand of the next several weeks. PPE is a crucial part of keeping our medical workers safe from the Covid-19 virus and able to continue their work saving lives in this pandemic.

For this reason, local hospitals are accepting home-sewn masks to be used in appropriate areas to conserve the supply of PPE for areas that require medical-grade equipment. It is our hope to connect as many of our members to this effort as possible. Some of you sew and might be willing to help make masks. Many of us don't sew but have fabric lying around that can be upcycled for this effort (think high-thread-count cotton sheets, etc.)

As of yesterday, Bronson has specifically been requesting this mask design:https://www.bronsonhealth.com/app/files/public/8410/OFFICIAL-Bronson-Face-Mask-Template.pdf
**Please understand, home-sewn masks aren't a replacement for medical-grade PPE. They won't be used where proper PPE is required.**

If you are interested in connecting to the larger community effort, you can check out the Facebook group called SWMI Med Mask Project: https://www.facebook.com/groups/SWMI.MedMaskProject/
(This group asks that you specifically review the Announcements page before you engage with the group as they are updating it continually and things are constantly shifting.)

**As Bronson notes in their instructions: It is essential that nobody involved in the creation, distribution or delivery of homemade masks have any symptoms of COVID-19 (fever, cough, shortness of breath) or have recently been exposed to anyone experiencing these symptoms or who has been tested positive for COVID-19. This is particularly important for those of us living with physicians in our homes.**

If you have fabric in your home that you would like to donate to the effort, you can drop it off on my front porch in a brown paper bag and I will connect with people who are currently sewing masks in their homes. My address can be found in the K**A directory or you post in the comments and I will send you directions.

Thanks for all you are doing to support your spouse, your homes and our community during this time of great need.

This is a wonderful video from TED and fellow physician spouse Susan David, PhD.

"Life's beauty is inseparable from its fragility," says psychologist Susan David. In a special virtual conversation, she shares wisdom on how to build resilience, courage and joy in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic. Responding to listeners' questions from across the globe, she offers ways to talk to your children about their emotions, keep focus during the crisis and help those working on the front lines. (This virtual conversation is part of the TED Connects series, hosted by head of TED Chris Anderson and current affairs curator Whitney Pennington Rodgers. Recorded March 23, 2020)

We're checking in on you. This is a scary time for all people, but we understand better than anyone that medical families are carrying an intense burden. Our partners are facing realities they've never imagined, and we are doing our best on the home front to face it with them. We are considering how to protect our own families as our partners run straight into the crisis every day. And many of us are putting on brave faces for our children and trying to keep things normal when nothing at all seems normal. We know you are standing in the middle of it all, and we want you to know your K**A family is with you. Even if we can't be together physically, we are brainstorming ways of supporting each other during these unprecedented times. You will receive further communication soon via email about some of the ideas we've begun to discuss, but for now, please just let us know how you're doing. We will get through this together.

Did you know the Flint Water Crisis whistleblower Dr Mona Hanna-Attisha is speaking to our community tonight? Our friend Lia Gaggino was on the panel talking about how lead is impacting children in Kalamazoo. We have a lot of work to do together to make this a safer place to live for all children.
