This client was having difficulty getting grass established in this high-flow stormwater runoff point and soil was beginning to erode. We built this oversized dry creek to handle the high flow and planted both sides with native plants to stabilize the area.

In this one planting we used a mix of native trees, shrubs, sedges, grasses, ferns, and perennials. The Iris versicolor (right/front) is a great performer! This site has very high deer pressure, BTW.

I included a few Cardinal Flower because I want to mimic how it proliferates in the wild, through flooding events and disturbed/exposed soil. The goal is to get a "river" of it through here with just the few plants we started with!

I don't think we'll have any issue getting the Great Blue Lobelia going through the same process.

Native sedges, grasses and ground covers are workhorses of most gardens we design. All layers of the planting are critically important and diversity is key, but I would be remiss not to consider the function, durability, and deer resistance of grasses and sedges. Just plant more!

I've said it before and I will say it again. If you see this account posting a plant for sale, the plant is worth looking into. She's suppling superstar plants. We get a ton of milage out of Skullcap- it's been easy to establish, seems long-lived, deer haven't bothered it, tolerates drought and shade. We love it for woodland edges or those areas where the sun's intensity changes depending on the time of summer. If you are one of our more recent clients you'll see this in your garden already, thanks to growers like Josie's Native Plants who are helping people put great plants into their gardens. Support your local native plant growers!
