Inka Falcon is a service company that offers Bird Abatement services to farms and other entities in an attempt to ecologically remove “pest” birds from their orchards. Bird Abatement has become increasingly popular among farmers due to its efficiency in controlling the pest bird problem apparent in every fruit orchard in the country. Abatement can help to reduce the amount of damage to crops up to ten percent, which to the farmer or farming company, can equal thousands of dollars in profit.

“What does this band mean?”
This band is issued as part of a federally regulated system used to identify captive-bred birds of prey in the United States. Each band carries a unique number that can be traced to the bird’s records.

The “US GOV” marking indicates the band was issued under a program regulated by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. In this case, Junior is a captive-bred aplomado falcon legally possessed and flown under federal and state permits.

Many of the birds used in falconry, bird abatement, conservation projects, and educational programs are tracked through this system.

It’s a small band with a big story behind it. 🪶

Another morning in the blueberry fields.
Before every flight, I take a few minutes to remove the jesses, fit a GPS, and get my aplomado falcon ready for the day. Once she’s in the air, her job is simple: be a falcon.
Aplomado falcons have become one of my favorite species to work with in bird abatement. Fast, intelligent, and always keeping me on my toes. Watching them move through the fields at sunrise is something I never get tired of.

Throwback to 2011 🦅

This photo was taken back in 2011 while I was training a pack of six male Harris’s Hawks to fly together in a cherry orchard as part of a bird abatement program. Their job was simple: make their presence known and encourage pest birds to leave the farm before they could damage the crop.

Training multiple Harris’s Hawks to work together is one of the things that makes this species so unique. Unlike most birds of prey, Harris’s Hawks are naturally social and can hunt cooperatively.

To conduct this type of work in the United States, a falconer must hold a valid falconry permit and the appropriate bird abatement authorization issued through the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service and applicable state agencies.

One of my favorite memories from those days was riding my four-wheeler through the orchard with all six hawks following behind me. It honestly felt like that scene from Jurassic Park where the handler is moving around with a pack of velociraptors. Everywhere I went, the hawks followed, and their constant presence helped push pest birds out of the farm.

Looking back, those years taught me a lot about teamwork, training, and just how intelligent Harris’s Hawks can be.
