FLINT BEND CONSTRUCTION
NOW HIRING - SKILLED REMODELING / FINISH CARPENTER
Location: Keokuk, Iowa & Surrounding Area
Position: Skilled Remodeling / Finish Carpenter
Starting Pay: Based on Experience & Demonstrated Skill
Flint Bend Construction is seeking a highly skilled, dependable, and well-rounded carpenter for construction, remodeling,
renovation, and repair projects.
This position requires more than basic carpentry experience. We are looking for someone capable of working across multiple
phases of a project while maintaining professional standards for quality, efficiency, organization, and craftsmanship.
The right person should be able to receive a scope of work, evaluate existing conditions, determine how the work should be
approached, identify potential problems, and complete assigned work without requiring constant supervision.
CORE SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
• Finish Carpentry: baseboard, casing, shoe molding, crown molding, cabinet installation, fillers and trim, shelving, built-ins, scribing,
door jambs, finish hardware, stairs/railings, punch-list work, accurate miters, copes, joints, and reveals.
• Windows & Doors: removal, replacement and installation; rough-opening preparation; level, plumb and square installation;
adjustment and hardware; flashing, weatherproofing, and interior/exterior finishing.
• Siding & Exterior Trim: vinyl and other common siding systems, soffit, fascia, exterior trim, flashing, water management, repair, and
replacement.
• Metal Brake Work: must be efficient and competent with a metal brake and capable of producing professional-quality aluminum trim
for windows, doors, fascia, exterior trim, flashing, and custom field applications.
• Demolition: selective interior/exterior demolition, removal of finishes and building components, protection of surrounding property,
recognition of structural/utility concerns, and safe organized work areas.
• Concrete: basic forming, placement, screeding, floating, edging, troweling, repair, and professional finishing.
• Flooring: LVP/LVT, laminate, hardwood and other common systems, underlayment, layout, transitions, base, and finish trim.
• Painting & Finish Preparation: interior/exterior painting, surface preparation, cutting-in, rolling, caulking, patching, sanding, and
final finish preparation.
• Roofing: asphalt shingles, basic metal roofing, tear-off and replacement, repairs, flashing, roof penetrations, and basic
water-shedding principles.
• Minor Plumbing: faucets, toilets, fixture replacement, basic drain work, water-supply connections, PEX, and common residential
repairs.
• Minor Electrical: switches, receptacles, light fixtures, basic device replacement, and basic troubleshooting within the individual's
qualifications and where legally permitted.
• General Carpentry & Remodeling: remodeling framing, wall/opening modifications, blocking, repairs to existing structures,
construction layout, existing-condition work, and proper construction sequencing.
BUILDING CODES & CONSTRUCTION STANDARDS
Applicants should have a working familiarity with basic residential and construction building-code requirements related to the
work they perform.
This includes basic framing; stairs and guardrails; doors and windows; emergency escape and rescue openings; decks and structural
work; roofing and flashing; weatherproofing and water management; basic electrical and plumbing requirements; smoke and
carbon-monoxide alarm considerations; fasteners/connectors; and general jobsite and life-safety requirements.
Applicants are not expected to memorize the entire building code, but they are expected to recognize when work may involve a code,
permit, structural, electrical, plumbing, or safety issue and ask before proceeding when uncertain.
Work must comply with applicable plans, manufacturer instructions, permits, codes, and Flint Bend Construction standards.
"That's how I've always done it" is not an acceptable substitute for doing the work correctly.
YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO
• Read a tape measure accurately and work confidently with fractions.
• Perform construction calculations and accurate layout.
• Make accurate cuts and understand level, plumb, square, pitch, and elevation.
• Work effectively with buildings that are not perfectly square or level.
• Identify problems before covering them up and develop practical field solutions.
• Understand proper construction sequencing and produce professional-quality finished work.
• Work efficiently without sacrificing craftsmanship.
• Maintain an organized work area and protect customer property and completed work.
• Recognize defective materials and improper conditions.
• Communicate problems before they become expensive.
• Take responsibility for workmanship and complete assigned work with limited supervision.
QUALITY AND PRODUCTION BOTH MATTER
Flint Bend Construction expects CRAFTSMANSHIP - RELIABILITY - ACCOUNTABILITY - EFFICIENCY - PROFESSIONALISM.
Quality workmanship is mandatory. Production also matters. Taking all day to complete a two-hour task is not acceptable simply
because the finished product looks good. Likewise, completing work quickly does not matter if somebody has to come behind you and
repair it.
A professional tradesperson must be capable of producing quality work at a professional pace.
EXPERIENCE
Previous construction and remodeling experience is strongly preferred.
Demonstrated ability matters more than years claimed on a resume.
Applicants should expect their knowledge, measurements, construction judgment, problem-solving abilities, and practical trade skills to
be evaluated during the hiring process.
Nobody is expected to know everything. If you do not know something, we would rather hear "I don't know, but I can figure it out"
than have someone guess and create an expensive problem.
TOOLS & TRANSPORTATION
Applicants must have dependable transportation and be capable of reliably reporting to assigned jobsites.
Ownership of common construction and carpentry hand tools is preferred. Specific tool requirements will depend on the position and
project.
OPPORTUNITY FOR ADVANCEMENT
Exceptional performance can lead to increased compensation, greater project responsibility, Lead Carpenter responsibilities, field
leadership opportunities, and advancement within Flint Bend Construction.
We are looking for people interested in improving their skills, taking responsibility, and building something long-term.
We want craftsmen who can solve problems - not simply point them out
