Got a call that a water heater was failing to produce hot water. When we got there it was apparent that it had been leaking for quite some time and was falling through the floor. This was right before the holidays so we did all that we could to repair the floor and get hot water back on in the house that night.

With this storm hitting the Hudson Valley tomorrow here are a few tips from your new favorite plumbers:

* Remove any hoses that may be connected to your outside hose bib.

* Periodically check on the pipes in any unheated spaces you may have in your home. If you suspect a freezing pipe, run a trickle of water from any fixture that shares the line.

*If you have an outdoor oil tank for heating oil, it would be a good idea to add anti-gel additive to prevent blockages to your oil burner and ultimately stopping your heating system from operating.

*If you are unfamiliar with the location of your main water shut off, tonight would be a good night to familiarize yourself in the event of burst pipes.
