Remove your garden hose tonight! It is going to get very cold this week..... Reminder that your frost free spigot will freeze if your hose is still connected.

Pull off your hoses tonight while the temperatures are above freezing! A frost free sillcock, hose bib, or spout will not be frosts free if it has a hose full of water connected to it.

Frost free requires that the spigot side be dry while the valve which is in the basement is off. A frost free spigot has a valve that is 4 to 14 inches or greater (depending on your model) inside the walls- keeping the water away from the icy conditions outside. If you have a hose connected, you don't have frost free! These pictures show what a frozen pipe will look like once it ruptures from the expanding ice. The good news is you wont know this one is broken until you try to turn it on. The bad news is this will cause a flooded basement while you think you are watering your daisies in the spring!

Non frost free spigots are at risk when the temperatures drop. If you have a valve in your basement that runs to the spigot, turn it off and then drain the spigot. If you do not have such a turn off valve, be sure that the pipe is open to a warm area in the basement and you might put an outdoor faucet cover over it to protect it from the cold.
Stay warm!
