This was my first time using Pastelboard. To fully test out its working properties, I chose a reference with a strong reflection and did the top half using dry pastels and the bottom half using oil pastels. The reference photo was taken at a local golf course.

"Strawberry Surprised"
Acrylic on Canvas Panel, 9x12

This painting was based on a photo of a still life scene I arranged. Sometimes fruit looks a little anthropomorphic to me and this painting elaborates on what I saw in my mind's eye. This is the first painting in a series of paintings I'm calling "Magic Moments." More fun coming soon!

Acrylic on Canvas Panel, 5x7

I painted this little desert landscape as a demonstration for my wife, who prefers to work in acrylics. I prefer oils, as a rule, but when I don't have weeks or months to wait for paint to dry, acrylics are a great alternative.

One day, as I was looking for something to paint, I came across a photograph of a wave tunnel. I loved the sense of light and motion. I wasn't sure I was up to the challenge of painting realistic water in a medium that I've found to be challenging enough in and of itself, but ultimately I found myself disinterested in "safer" subjects. I was pleasantly surprised with how well this little painting turned out.

"Peaceful Beach at Sunset"
Soft Pastel on Mi-Teintes paper, 11x14, **SOLD**

There's nothing quite like the cool evening breeze on the beach as you watch the sun go down. There aren't any beaches like this in Kingman, though, so I took my inspiration instead from a photo available from Pexels via their pixabay.com profile. The photo reference was relatively dark, however, and I wanted to really capture the orange glow of sunset. To that end, this soft pastel piece was done on an earthy-orange sheet of Mi-Teintes paper.

"The Pink Lotus Blossom"
Oil Pastel on Pastelmat, 8x12

Inspired by the classic works of Claude Monet, I decided to try my hand at painting a lily pond this past summer. Not having so convenient access to such a pond as Monet had, this painting was based on a photograph by Sabrina Eickoff (via pixabay.com). However, in Sabrina's photo all the blossoms were white. Captivated by the glowing effect of pink-tinted lotus blossoms, I used a photo by Frauke Riether (also on pixabay) as a color overlay for the foreground flower.

"Sentinel"
Oil on Canvas Panel, 11x14

One day in the spring of 2018, Holly and I were in the outskirts of town when I saw this crow surveying the surrounding desert from atop a light post. I was captivated by the way the pole and the bird were silhouetted against the blue sky surrounded by swirling clouds. I snapped several photos with my smart phone, one of which became the basis for this painting.

"Yellow Rose"
Watercolor on Paper, 5x7.5

This summer I had the opportunity to house-sit for a friend who grows the most beautiful roses. A little yellow rose blossomed while I was caring for it and I was able to take a number of photos throughout that process. This painting was based on one of my favorite photos of the flower in full bloom.

"Pink Hollyhock in Sunlight"
Watercolor on Paper, 8.5x11

This is another painting based on a photo of hollyhocks in my backyard. This one captures the translucent effect of the petals with the evening sun shining through them. One of my goals as an artist is to learn to replicate ethereal lighting effectively, so this was a perfect subject to study.

"Pink Hollyhocks Against a Brick Wall."
Oil on canvas, 16x20

Hollyhocks grow as weeds in Kingman, but my wife and I make an effort to encourage them. These popped up in our backyard in the spring of 2021 and I snapped a photo of them in the warm evening light. I began this painting based on the photo in November of last year and completed it in June.
