Why don’t slab yards always show prices on natural stone? 👀

Because the price of a slab isn’t always as simple as the number you see in the showroom.

Natural stone pricing can depend on several factors, including scarcity, quality, value, who is purchasing the slab, and the fabricator’s purchasing volume with that particular slab yard.

And even if you do see a price, it may only represent the stone itself.

It might not include transportation from the slab yard, fabrication, cutting, installation, and other costs required to turn that beautiful slab into your finished countertop.

In some cases, those additional costs can even exceed the price of the stone itself.

So when shopping for marble, quartzite, granite, or other natural stone, don’t ask only:

“How much is this slab?”

Ask: “What will this cost when it’s completely fabricated and installed?”

The biggest flooring myth? “LVT is waterproof and basically indestructible.” 👀

Luxury vinyl is a very durable flooring option—but that doesn’t mean you can do anything to it.

It can still scratch.
It can still be damaged.
And a serious flood can still allow water underneath the flooring, creating the potential for mold and mildew.

So when you see terms like “waterproof” or “scratch-resistant,” understand what they actually mean before choosing your floors.

There is no bulletproof flooring.

The better question is: Which flooring is right for the way you actually live?

Got a surprisingly low countertop quote? Make sure you know what’s actually included.

A quote may look great until additional charges start appearing for cutouts, holes, seams, installation, second-floor access, special cuts, shower niches, waterfall edges, or other fabrication details.

You should also understand what responsibility the fabricator carries after installation and whether that liability is clearly addressed in their paperwork.

A good fabricator will walk the designer and homeowner through the project in detail so everyone understands the true cost before fabrication begins.

There’s nothing wrong with asking a lot of questions—especially when you’re investing in beautiful stone for your home.

Don’t compare countertop quotes by price alone. Compare what you’re actually getting.

You’ve invested in beautiful hardwood flooring. So what does it actually take to keep it looking good?

Not as much as you might think.

For an oil-finished wood floor, re-oiling may only be necessary every 2–3 years. Beyond that, some of the most effective maintenance is preventative.

Use mats at your entrances, sweep and mop regularly, trim your dog’s nails, put felt pads underneath furniture, avoid damaging high heels, and—most importantly—don’t drag that couch across your beautiful wood floor when you decide to rearrange the room. 😅

Quality flooring is designed to be lived on. Taking a few simple precautions can help it age beautifully for years to come.

Choosing the perfect slab is only the beginning.

Imagine investing in a beautiful piece of natural stone only to discover after installation that the veins don’t align or the seams interrupt the pattern.

That’s why slab layout is such an important part of the fabrication process.

Because every natural stone slab is different, digital scanning and 3D layout technology can help visualize the finished result before the material is cut. This allows the team to evaluate vein movement, seam placement, and the overall composition ahead of installation.

When working with marble, quartzite, granite, or other natural stone, thoughtful planning can be just as important as the slab you select.

Select the stone carefully. Plan the layout intentionally. Fabricate with the finished result in mind.

Is real hardwood actually worth the extra cost? 🪵

Think about it like real leather vs. cloth. You’re not only paying for the material—you’re investing in how it feels, wears, ages, and develops character over time.

Real hardwood can develop a beautiful natural patina as the years pass. Scratches, texture, and everyday wear can become part of the floor’s character—especially with distressed and naturally textured finishes.

So when comparing real hardwood vs. LVP, don’t look only at today’s price.

Think about what you want your floors to look and feel like 10–15 years from now.

Would you pay more upfront for real wood?

Should you build an ADU or a DADU?

The answer isn’t always obvious.

For some homeowners, expanding the existing house with an attached ADU makes the most sense. For others, a detached DADU may better support their property and long-term plans.

The key is understanding all of your options before making the investment. Site conditions, local requirements, budget, intended use, and future plans can all influence which direction makes the most sense.

Before you decide what to build, get the information you need to make an informed decision.

Why can the real cost of an ADU be so different from the prices you see online?

Some advertised square-foot prices focus primarily on building the structure itself. They may not account for site preparation, electrical work, plumbing, sewer connections, civil infrastructure, utilities, or the level of finishes you ultimately select.

The same ADU design can also have very different costs depending on the property and expectations for the finished space.

Before using an online price to determine whether an ADU or DADU fits your budget, make sure you understand exactly what that number includes—and what it leaves out.

A realistic budget starts with evaluating the entire property and project.

Marble can be the perfect material—in the right space.

There’s a reason homeowners love natural marble. Its movement, character, and timeless appearance are difficult to replicate. But choosing it should involve more than appearance.

Marble is a softer, more porous material, so a busy kitchen with wine, sauces, spills, and everyday cooking may require more sealing, cleaning, and maintenance. You also need to be comfortable with the patina that can naturally develop.

For some homeowners, using marble in a bathroom instead of on a heavily used kitchen countertop can be a better fit.

Beautiful design starts with selecting materials that work for your space, your expectations, and your lifestyle.

Why does wide plank flooring work so well in today’s open-concept homes?

Homes have changed. Instead of separate living rooms, dining rooms, dens, and kitchens, many newer homes bring everything together into one expansive great room.

That changes the scale of the flooring too.

Narrow planks can introduce a lot of visual lines across a large space, while wider and longer planks create fewer seams and a calmer, more cohesive appearance. Options like DUCHATEAU’s 9.5-inch-wide and 6-foot-long planks can feel much more proportional in a large great room.

When selecting flooring, don’t think about color alone. Consider plank width, length, room size, and the overall scale of your architecture.
