Our tomato plants are quite large, but we don’t want to dig a super deep hole because the soil temperature will be too cold. Better yet, using the trench method to plant our tomato plants will ensure better root structure! Roots will form all along the stem of the tomato plant if you give it a chance.

Let us know if you try the trench method when planting your tomato plants!

We LOVE peppers! 🌶️🔥

We love the heat, the flavor, and finding ways to preserve them so we can enjoy them all year long. All summer our two dehydrators are humming away making chili flakes for pizza and chili crisp. And a jar of pickled cherry peppers on a sandwich? Chef’s kiss! 👨‍🍳💋

What we really love are peppers with a story.

The Datil pepper made its way from Spain to St. Augustine before the United States was even founded. The Jimmy Nardello pepper traveled through Ellis Island tucked in the pocket of an Italian immigrant. And the Aji Amarillo pepper in Peru is about as common as ketchup at a cookout, a staple ingredient in Peruvian cooking that goes back thousands of years to the Incas.

Around here we grow plenty of the classics too, cayenne, cherry peppers, poblano, serrano, and jalapeño. They all end up in the kitchen one way or another.

Peppers bring the heat, the flavor, and a little history to the garden. And we’re here for all of it. 🌶️

One thing we really care about at Backyard Rowes is supporting local businesses. 🌱

Whenever we can, we choose to spend our money with people in our community instead of big box stores. Local businesses are run by neighbors, families, and people who truly care about what they do.

When it comes to plants and gardening, we’re lucky to have some great local spots nearby. We love visiting Knoxville Seed & Greenhouse and Stanley’s Greenhouse. Both are great places with great people, and it always feels good knowing we’re supporting local.

If you’re able to this season, try to shop local. It makes a difference.
