The one pest that starts breeding before most people think about it...Mosquitoes. Quick reminder for homeowners:

Mosquito season starts in spring.

Not July.

All they need is standing water the size of a bottle cap.

Check:
• Clogged gutters
• Flower pot trays
• Kids’ toys
• Tarps
• Low spots in the yard

The first warm rains trigger egg hatching.

If you wait until you’re getting bitten, you’re already behind.

If you’re unsure what you’re seeing around your home this spring, feel free to message me.

Why You’re Seeing More Spiders (the pest that follows all the others) - Spiders don’t randomly explode in spring.

They follow food.

If you’re knocking down webs weekly in your garage, basement, or corners of rooms, that usually means insect activity is increasing.

Spiders are secondary indicators.

When I inspect homes in our area this time of year, rising spider activity almost always points to:

• Ant populations
• Early termite movement
• Moisture issues

Decrease the food, water and shelter conditions that spiders like from around your home and you'll see fewer spiders inside.

Friday I’ll talk about the one pest that starts breeding before most people think about it.

Termite Swarmers: If you see winged insects around your windows this spring, don’t assume they’re ants.

Termites swarm in East Tennessee when soil temps warm up after rain.

What homeowners usually notice:
• A sudden group of winged insects inside
• Tiny clear wings on the windowsill
• “Flying ants” that look a little off

If swarmers are inside the house, the colony is usually very close to the structure.

This is one of those “early is cheaper than late” situations.

This Tuesday: the pest that follows all the others.

Carpenter Ants (Not “Just Ants”)

Several calls this week in Maryville for large black ants inside homes.

Those are often carpenter ants.

They don’t eat wood like termites — but they tunnel into it to build nests.

What to watch for:
• Large black ants (especially near windows or chimneys)
• Small piles of sawdust under trim
• Activity in the evening

Spring is when satellite colonies show up inside.

If you’re seeing more than one or two, it’s worth paying attention.

Friday I’ll cover something homeowners often confuse with flying ants… but costs a lot more.

If you’re unsure what you’re seeing around your home this spring, feel free to message me.

Good morning, neighbors —

When the temperatures start bouncing between 45° and 70°, insects wake up fast.

And spring is when small pest issues turn into expensive ones if ignored.

Over the next few days, I’m going to highlight a few specific pests that show up in East Tennessee homes every spring — what to watch for and when to act.

Today’s message is simple:

If you’re suddenly seeing insects indoors, it’s not random.
Spring emergence is very predictable.

Stay tuned — tomorrow I’ll cover the first one homeowners often mistake for “just ants.”
