Proper invert mud (the carefully laid brick and mortar work at the bottom of a manhole or catch basin) is the unsung hero of any solid drainage system. Here’s why we take it so seriously:

🌞 Heat Safety Reminder from Block Solid Construction 🌞
At Block Solid Construction, we’re out here building strong foundations even in the summer heat — but your safety always comes first. With temperatures rising, it’s critical to recognize the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke and know how to prevent them.
⚠️ Warning Signs:
• Heat Exhaustion: Heavy sweating, weakness, dizziness, nausea, headache, muscle cramps, or cool/clammy skin.
• Heat Stroke (Medical Emergency): High body temperature, confusion, slurred speech, hot/dry skin, seizures, or loss of consciousness. Call 911 immediately if you see these!
🛠️ Preventative Tips for Staying Safe on the Job:
• Hydrate constantly — Drink water before you’re thirsty. Avoid caffeine and alcohol.
• Take frequent breaks in the shade or a cool area.
• Wear light-colored, loose-fitting clothing and use sunscreen.
• Know your teammates — Check on each other regularly (the “buddy system” works!).
• Acclimate gradually if you’re just starting in the heat.
• Use cooling towels, fans, or misting if available.

🚧 Site Update: Getting Drainage Right from the Start!🚧

Here’s a look at a key moment during our recent project — a large corrugated drainage pipe being re-installed through a new Rockwood segmental block retaining wall.

Proper installation like this isn’t just about “making it fit.” Notice how the pipe passes cleanly through the wall with a concrete collar to be poured around the pe*******on point, and rebar is properly placed and tied into the block structure for reinforcement. The surrounding area is prepped with gravel and geo-grid to ensure stability when water flows where it’s supposed to.

Why this matters:
• Water Management: Without correctly sized and sloped drainage pipes penetrating the wall, water builds up behind the structure. This creates hydrostatic pressure that can crack blocks, bow walls, or cause total failure over time.

• Structural Integrity: Using rebar and a poured concrete collar seals the pe*******on, prevents shifting or settling, and maintains the wall’s strength. Poorly done pe*******ons become weak points that allow leaks, erosion, and eventual collapse.

• Long-Term Protection: Good drainage protects the foundation, prevents soil washout, avoids costly repairs, and keeps your property (and neighbors’) safe and dry for decades.

Cutting corners on drainage and wall pe*******ons is one of the most expensive mistakes in construction. Doing it right the first time saves time, money, and headaches down the road.
