"How long will my house be torn up?"

It's the question we get most, and the answer surprises people: for a typical Oʻahu or Maui home, the panels go on in one day. Here's what that day actually looks like. ☀️

7:00 AM — The crew arrives, walks the property with you, and lays down protection. We park where you tell us to park.

Morning — Mounts and flashing go onto the roof. This is the part that matters most in Hawaiʻi: our trade winds, salt air and sideways rain punish a lazy roof pe*******on. Every one gets sealed and flashed properly, because we're the ones who'll be back if it doesn't hold.

Midday — Rails and panels. This is the fast, satisfying part.

Afternoon — Inverter, conduit and any Tesla Powerwall mounting. Conduit runs get planned for how they look from the street, not just for what's convenient.

End of day — Cleanup, magnet sweep for stray screws, walkthrough with you.

Then comes the part nobody tells you about: inspection and HECO interconnection approval. Your system is on the roof, but it can't switch on until the county signs off and HECO gives the green light. That's typically a few weeks, and it's the stretch where a local company earns its keep — we file the paperwork, we chase it, and we tell you where it stands.

Waikīkī is about to get very busy — in the best possible way. 🌺

Duke's OceanFest returns August 14–24, honoring Duke Paoa Kahanamoku, the waterman who carried aloha further than anyone. The Opening Ceremony is Friday the 14th at the Duke statue (procession at 4:45, ceremony at 5), and it's open to everyone. Then it's ten days of longboarding, the Waikīkī Ocean Mile Swim, keiki surf, canoe racing with our Wounded Warriors, even the surf dogs — right through Duke's sunrise birthday lei draping on the 24th.

What we love about OceanFest is that it isn't a tourist show. It's the community showing up for each other, the way Duke did.

Showing up for each other is on a lot of minds right now. The average Oʻahu electric bill is up about $60 a month compared to last summer — roughly 30% — because oil prices drive roughly half of what we all pay HECO (Honolulu Civil Beat, July 30). Maui families are feeling about 27% of the same squeeze.

We can't do much about the price of a barrel of oil. But we can help a neighbor put the one resource Hawaiʻi has in abundance to work on their own roof.

- The 30% federal credit did end on December 31, 2025. That part is true.
- But Hawaiʻi's own state solar tax credit is still here — 35% of your system cost, up to $5,000.
- And this is the big one: Hawaiʻi has the highest electricity rates in the nation, around 42¢ per kWh. That's why a typical home system here pays for itself in roughly 4–6 years, versus 8–12 on the mainland.

Traditional full-retail net metering — where every kilowatt you sent to the grid counted like a credit at full price — is no longer open to new customers in Hawaiʻi. HECO has moved to its Smart Renewable Energy programs, where the energy you export is credited at set rates that change by time of day, plus battery programs (like BYOD) that reward you for storing your own power.

Here's the plain-English version: the new programs reward homes that store solar in a battery and use it in the evening, rather than sending it all to the grid during the day. For many Oahu and Maui families, that means a solar + battery system now makes more sense than panels alone.
