Ticks are exploding on the North Shore. Here’s how to protect your family — without drenching your yard in chemicals.
If you’re spending more time outside this summer, ticks are, too. Adult ticks in Illinois are most active from April through June, and they stay a risk anytime it’s warm from spring into fall. Deer ticks (black-legged ticks) can transmit Lyme disease, while American dog ticks can spread other serious infections like Rocky Mountain spotted fever. Lake County and surrounding North Shore areas are now considered Lyme-positive hotspots, which means protecting your yard isn’t optional anymore — it’s part of basic family health.
The challenge is that most tick and mosquito programs rely on synthetic chemicals like pyrethroids. They kill ticks, but they also linger on surfaces, can wash into storm drains, and harm beneficial insects like bees and butterflies. Many of the families we talk to want the protection, but not the harsh residue.
