⚠️ Take a look at your breaker panel. If you cannot remember the last time anybody opened it, this one is for you.

A lot of homes around Brazoria County are still running on the panel they were built with. That was the right panel for a house with one window unit, a stove, and a couple of TVs. It is a different story now. Today that same house is running central air, a dishwasher, a microwave, a second refrigerator in the garage, a deep freezer, and a dozen chargers plugged in somewhere.

Here is what we look for when we open one up:

✅ Service size. Older homes on 60 or 100 amp services are often stretched thin by what the family actually uses now.
✅ Obsolete panels. Some brands installed decades ago have known problems and are no longer considered safe to keep in service.
✅ Double tapped breakers. Two wires crowded onto one breaker, usually a sign somebody added a circuit without adding capacity.
✅ Corrosion. Living near the coast is rough on metal, and panels are not sealed against humidity the way people assume.
✅ Space. A panel with no room left to add a circuit is a panel that will limit every project you want to do.

None of this means you need a new panel. Plenty of the ones we open are in fine shape. But you should know which one you have.

⛈️ Here is the part of storm season nobody talks about: the damage often does not happen during the storm. It happens when the power comes back.

When the lights return after an outage, the grid does not always come back smoothly. Voltage spikes ride in on that restored power and land on everything still plugged in. The AC control board. The refrigerator. The oven. The router, the TV, the well pump, the garage door opener. Modern homes are full of electronics that did not exist in the houses these panels were built for, and a single surge can take out several of them at once.

A whole home surge protective device installed at your panel is the first line of defense. Add plug in protection at the sensitive stuff and you have a layered setup that handles both the big hits from outside and the smaller everyday surges your own appliances create.

⚡ Hurricane season is hitting its peak, and the question we hear most this time of year is a simple one: can I run my air conditioner off a generator?

The answer depends on which kind of generator you have, and the difference is bigger than most folks expect.

If you have a whole home standby unit like the one pictured, you are in good shape. A standby generator is permanently installed, runs on natural gas or propane, and starts itself the moment the power drops. It is sized and engineered up front to carry the house, air conditioning included, so it handles the big startup surge on its own. No soft starter needed. Nothing to go drag out of the garage at two in the morning.

If you have a portable generator, that is where an EasyStart earns its keep. Your AC compressor pulls a heavy spike the instant it kicks on, several times its running load, and that spike is exactly what stalls a portable unit that looked plenty big on paper. An EasyStart soft starter smooths that spike out and brings the air conditioner within reach of a portable generator.

Either way, the connection is the part that has to be done right. A standby ties in through an automatic transfer switch or a manual transfer switch. A portable needs a permanently mounted inlet box with a proper interlock at your panel. What neither one can ever be is a homemade cord into a dryer outlet, because backfeeding your house puts your family and the linemen working your street in real danger.

Both setups are calm, scheduled work in a week like this one. Neither is something to figure out the afternoon a storm gets a name.

1. Nudge the thermostat up a few degrees when you are out.
2. Switch to LED bulbs and use about 75% less energy.
3. Run ceiling fans counterclockwise so they push cool air down.

See those little TEST and RESET buttons on some of your outlets? That means it's a GFCI, and it's quietly doing one of the most important jobs in your house.

A GFCI cuts power in a fraction of a second if it senses electricity going where it shouldn't, like into water or into you. That's why the code puts them near sinks, in bathrooms, garages, and outside.
